Chapter 19
Chapter 19
Pei Yuming blinked hard. Once he made out the familiar sealed room around him, he let out a soft breath.
Sure enough, he had come back again.
For some reason, a flicker of secret delight rose in his heart.
So even after doing so many outrageous things, he could still return safe and sound. That gave him a huge boost of confidence.
He cautiously looked toward the police officer at the computer. When the man glanced over, Pei Yuming took the initiative to speak. “Comrade officer, when will Officer Cao be back?”
“What’s the rush? He just stepped out. Wait.”
His attempt to be friendly was rebuffed, and Pei Yuming gave an awkward grin. But he did not miss the useful information in the officer’s words.
He had said Officer Cao had just stepped out. In fact, Pei Yuming had noticed this the last few times as well. It seemed that every time he had a Flashback, the amount of time he spent over there had no connection to the time and space here. Whether he stayed over there for one minute or one hour, less than a single second seemed to pass here. Put simply, time in the two spaces did not affect each other.
Pei Yuming shifted his legs slightly. He remembered that when the officers had pinned him to the ground just now, his left knee had hit the floor especially hard. Barring any surprises, it would definitely swell up afterward.
But right now, he could not feel any pain at all. Did that mean he could conclude that everything that happened in that time and space would have no effect on the him in this one?
With that thought in mind, Pei Yuming asked for water a second time.
After drinking it, he felt incomparably clear-headed. Once again, he was certain that what had happened before had absolutely not been a dream.
When Cao Lei returned, he was carrying a stack of documents. He sat down beside Pei Yuming with a grave expression and said earnestly, “We found some things that don’t look very good for you.”
Pei Yuming swallowed. “What?”
Cao Lei handed him two documents. “You bought these two insurance policies for your father and your daughter, didn’t you?”
Pei Yucheng’s expression froze for an instant. He took them and carefully read through the contents of the photocopies, his face flushing slightly with agitation.
“I didn’t buy them.” After reading them, Pei Yuming immediately realized what Cao Lei meant. Afraid Cao Lei would misunderstand him, he quickly explained, “My wife has always managed the money in our family. She bought these policies. But I knew about it. It’s been a long time.”
“But the beneficiary listed on your father’s policy is you.” Cao Lei took the papers back, flipped to one page, and pointed it out to him. “The beneficiaries on your daughter’s policy are you and your wife, but now your wife has also been murdered. In the end, the insurance payout still all goes to you.”
“You mean…” Pei Yuming’s face turned rather ugly.
“It’s only been half an hour,” Officer Cao said instead of answering him. “We’ll definitely find more later. If, in the end, all the clues still point to you, then to be honest, Lao Pei, even if I personally don’t want to suspect you, the police can only follow procedure in the face of evidence. If that happens, you’ll be in a very passive position.”
“Then… then what should I do?” The confidence Pei Yuming had just built up quickly ebbed away. “What can I do?”
Hearing him say that, Cao Lei secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at Pei Yuming encouragingly and asked sincerely, “Lao Pei, tell me the truth. Did you do it?”
“No. I really didn’t!” Pei Yuming panicked.
“Don’t get worked up.” Cao Lei immediately soothed him. “Can you think of anything else? You know, it would be best if we could provide more leads before they finish their investigation. That way, the police will have less reason to suspect you.”
“Leads…” Pei Yuming thought for a moment. “I know. I have a lead I can give you.”
Cao Lei’s expression relaxed. “All right. Tell me.”
Pei Yuming licked his lips and said, “That bottle you showed me just now, the one containing potassium cyanide. I suspect the killer found it in my house. He deliberately put the remaining potassium cyanide inside it to frame me.”
“Oh?” Cao Lei leaned closer, interested. “So you mean you already have a suspect in mind?”
“Yes.” Pei Yuming nodded firmly. “Lu Dong. It has to be him.”
