Chapter 29
Chapter 29
“Really? I’m not sure. Lu Dong gave them to me for my birthday last week.”
“Tsk, your family’s Director Lu really has taste-even his choice of high heels hits the bullseye.”
The remark was clearly loaded, and Pei Yuming wasn’t oblivious. He turned and shot a cold look at Bai Xue, then stormed into the bedroom, slamming the door.
Su Jin forced another awkward laugh, while Bai Xue bit her lip before saying, “Come on, let’s go to the kitchen. Help me stew the ribs. The ones you stewed at my place last time-Xiaobei praised them for half a month.”
Lu Dong arrived quickly. Su Jin had just put on her apron when he rang the doorbell.
Bai Xue called out several times for Pei Yuming to answer the door, but he didn’t respond, so in the end she went and opened it herself.
“Lu Dong is here,” Bai Xue said, holding back her temper as she went to the bedroom to fetch him. “Go out and talk to him. Dinner will still be a while.”
Pei Yuming was sitting on the bed, inspecting the first-aid kit and scrutinizing a vitamin C bottle in detail. Hearing Bai Xue order him to entertain Lu Dong, his face turned utterly cold.
“You go cook,” he said. “I’ll come out in a bit.”
Seeing his unhurried manner, Bai Xue grew annoyed. “This is our 20th anniversary. I’m not asking you to cook, but you should at least keep our guest company.”
Pei Yuming was a little impatient. “I know. Just go out first.”
Bai Xue was angered by his dismissive attitude, but today was an important day for her, and she didn’t want to spoil the mood, so she swallowed her anger and pushed the door open to leave.
Pei Yuming memorized specific details like the production date and wear marks on the bottle, and only emerged from the bedroom when he heard his younger brother speaking loudly in the living room.
“Are you okay, Lao Pei? I heard from Xiao Xue that you’re not feeling well. Has the hospital been too busy, wearing you out?” Lu Dong asked with concern.
“Definitely not as leisurely as you, Director,” Pei Yuming said, glancing at his brother before turning to Lu Dong. “After all, you’ve got the time to study which women’s high heels look good.”
The remark was harsh, and even Lu Dong, who usually seemed even-tempered, changed expression. He looked at Pei Yuming in confusion, as if trying to figure out whether he was joking or deliberately mocking him.
But after that jab, Pei Yuming didn’t even spare him a glance and headed straight to the kitchen.
“You two, come out. Stop what you’re doing,” he said.
“What’s the matter?” Bai Xue was surprised.
Su Jin began removing her disposable gloves, sneaking a glance at her senior colleague’s expression and sensing he had something to say.
Sure enough, Pei Yuming’s face grew even more serious. “There’s something. You’ll know soon.”
Seeing his mysterious air, Bai Xue felt a faint hope. Could he be deliberately downplaying things to then surprise her?
Even Su Jin nudged her, and the two women exchanged a look, barely able to hide their smiles.
Indeed, today deserved some thought. For Su Jin’s birthday, Lu Dong had given her shoes worth over ten thousand. A twentieth wedding anniversary didn’t come every year.
Since they finalized this gathering last week, every night before bed she had hinted to Pei Yuming that she was missing a shoulder bag. Even the most clueless person should understand what she meant.
But when she got to the living room, she looked around and saw no gift box or bag. Had he not taken it out yet?
Pei Yuming was completely oblivious to his wife’s delicate thoughts. Right now, his entire focus was on exposing Lu Dong. He wished he could just grab a knife and lunge at him like before, forcing Lu Dong to pull out his phone from his pocket and show it to Bai Xue and Su Jin.
But he knew he couldn’t do that again, or it would once again end up with everyone against him alone.
Pei Yuming walked over to his younger brother and whispered, “Do whatever I tell you to do in a moment, don’t ask questions, we’ll talk about your matter later.”
Pei Yucheng looked at his brother bewildered, his lips moved as if to ask what it was about, but seeing his brother’s grim expression, he didn’t dare ask.
Pei Yuming gestured to his brother, “Sit over there.”
That was the seat next to Lu Dong.
Pei Yucheng sat down indifferently, and then saw his elder brother also sit down, the two brothers flanking Lu Dong, completely trapping him in the middle of the sofa.
In front of them was the coffee table; if Lu Dong wanted to get out now, he could only stand up and step over the coffee table.
“Th-this…” Lu Dong was extremely surprised, a bit uncomfortable. “What’s going on, sitting so close?”
Pei Yuming extended his hand, palm facing him, and said, “Take it out. That dark-blue cell phone, I know it’s in your jacket’s inside pocket.”
As soon as he spoke, everyone in the room, one by one, could see Lu Dong’s face drastically change.
“You… what are you saying?” Lu Dong regained his composure and denied it. “What phone? Are you saying I took your phone? I’ve been wronged, Lao Pei!”
Pei Yuming didn’t listen to his evasions at all, he directly grabbed his arm, and at the same time signaled to his brother. Pei Yucheng was indeed confused but obediently followed suit.
“Take it out, that’s the cell phone you used to contact Li Xiaoya.”
Hearing him blatantly mention the name of his date, Lu Dong, even if he was extremely cunning, was stunned. He slowly turned to Pei Yuming, staring straight at him, stammering, “Wha-what did you say?”
Bai Xue and Su Jin, who had been watching the drama from the side, also noticed something was off. Bai Xue quickly walked over and asked, “What Li Xiaoya? Who is she?”
Before Lu Dong could answer, Pei Yuming answered for him, “His sex partner.”
Now, everyone in the room except Pei Yuming had their expressions change, either flushing red or paling, as vivid as a palette.
“What! You can’t just slander people like that!” Lu Dong glanced at Bai Xue and Su Jin, anxious to stand up, but was pulled back by the two Pei brothers.
“Lao Pei, don’t joke around recklessly. If my wife takes it seriously, I’ll be really mad at you!” Lu Dong refused to let up, arguing strenuously.
Pei Yuming glanced at his brother, and the two exerted force simultaneously. Taking advantage of Lu Dong’s unguarded moment, Pei Yuming reached out and smoothly retrieved the phone from his pocket.
Indeed, it was a dark-blue cell phone.
At this, the others had no choice but to believe it.
Bai Xue was the first to come closer, but Pei Yuming dodged her hand reaching for the phone and asked, “What’s the passcode?”
Lu Dong used all his strength but couldn’t break free from the brothers’ grip. In fact, his efforts were futile. Not to mention the two of them holding him down, even Pei Yuming alone could easily restrain him.
That’s because he was not only the skinniest of the three men, but also the shortest. As a result, in both strength and physique, he was almost completely dominated by the two brothers.
Seeing that resistance was useless, he finally could no longer keep up the act and angrily said, “What on earth do you want? This is just too much!”
Pei Yuming saw that he wouldn’t cry until he saw the coffin, so he forcefully bent Lu Dong’s right index finger, about to place it on the phone’s fingerprint sensor.
During this process, Lu Dong struggled fiercely. However, aside from Pei Yucheng being somewhat concerned that this might hurt their friendship and they might not be able to associate with each other in the future, Bai Xue and Su Jin, standing opposite, didn’t make a sound. Obviously, they were very interested in this phone.
