Chapter 60

Chapter 60

Zhu Yin soon saw the “missing” male lead.

Li Nanfeng came to see her alone. He looked terrible: haggard, eyes bloodshot, his chin covered in blue-black stubble he had not had time to shave.

He looked heartbroken, but Zhu Yin, who knew why, only wanted to sneer.

Why bother? He had already done it. He might as well be decisive and become a thorough villain.

Instead, he had to put on this display of unbearable grief.

The male and female leads truly were a perfect match in every possible respect, she thought.

“Doctor, I have a very important matter to entrust to you…”

The male lead asked her to perform an organ transplant. He did not mention the donor.

Zhu Yin could only pretend she did not know.

Several days later, Li Nanfeng arrived at the hospital carrying the familiar little fellow.

The doctor saw the tiny figure, “froze” for a long moment, and then abruptly understood.

“Mr. Li, have you lost your mind?” That was the doctor’s question, and Zhu Yin’s question as well.

Unless he had gone mad, it was difficult to explain how a father could “kill” his own son to prolong another person’s child’s life.

Zhu Yin had checked the plot again and again. Wanwan’s child truly had no connection to the male lead whatsoever.

The little boy had no idea what was about to happen. He nestled obediently in his father’s arms, and when he sensed a familiar presence, he excitedly spread his arms and strained his head toward Zhu Yin. “Doc-doctor…”

…What a poor little thing.

Zhu Yin rarely felt such tenderness toward anyone. She reached out to take the little bundle and squeezed his chubby body. “What are we going to do? Your beast of a father wants to kill you.”

The male lead–the beastly father standing right beside her, who had heard every word perfectly clearly: “…”

He warned, “Doctor!”

Zhu Yin did not care. She sneered. “What? Mr. Li dares to do it, but can’t bear to hear anyone say it?”

If this deranged world’s plot had not restricted her, she would have loved to call the police, contact every media outlet on the planet, and make this damned man famous.

Li Nanfeng lowered his eyes and met his son’s bright, innocent gaze, then looked away in shame.

Zhu Yin confirmed once more. “Mr. Li, have you truly made up your mind?”

Li Nanfeng was silent for a long time before he said, “I owe her this.”

Zhu Yin thought the life Wanwan had saved in childhood was certainly proving valuable.

She asked, “Your wife still doesn’t know. Do you intend to hide it from her?”

“She’ll hate you.”

This time, Li Nanfeng remained silent even longer.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to her,” he finally said.

“We’ll have other children.”

Lunatic, Zhu Yin thought, and had Barbara secretly send the female lead a message.

With perfect justification, she told herself: they would not let her change this plot point, but surely there was no problem with warning the female lead in advance?

Unfortunately, the male lead had raised the female lead into uselessness. Or perhaps she had always been useless. After marrying into a wealthy family all those years ago, she had not gained the slightest competence.

Zhu Yin did not see the female lead at all before the day of the operation.

Everything proceeded as usual.

“Little fellow.” Zhu Yin pinched the child’s cheek. “You’re going to have a little operation soon. Don’t be afraid. I won’t let it hurt.”

The child giggled and said with remarkable understanding, “Niannian… Niannian isn’t scared of pain!”

He was not even two. How could he understand the wickedness in the human heart?

The faint dark patterns on the silver bracelet seemed to come alive, gradually shining with golden light.

.

The operation went smoothly.

Li Nanfeng waited outside the entire time. When he heard the result, his whole body relaxed. Then, remembering something, he asked with trembling lips, “Th-then Niannian…”

Zhu Yin looked at him in surprise. “Mr. Li, I didn’t think even you would be stupid enough to ask that question.”

A dark gleam flickered through her deep eyes. Reeling from the tremendous shock to his mind, Li Nanfeng said in a daze, “Niannian… You make the arrangements for him.”

He did not dare look at the child.

That was precisely what Zhu Yin wanted.

No one ever saw the child again.

Nor did Zhu Yin see Liu Ruyan again.

Of course, she might not have seen Liu Ruyan herself, but she had the ever-dutiful Barbara, who regularly reported on the male and female leads and the plot’s progress.

After Liu Ruyan learned the truth, the male lead kept her confined in a villa until everything was over.

The male lead’s parents, who doted on their grandson, were never mentioned. Most likely, this deranged world had forgotten them.

Throughout her confinement, Liu Ruyan prayed that the news she had received was false. Her husband was Niannian’s biological father. How could he possibly do such a thing?

But clearly, the heavens of this world did not answer her.

At last, Li Nanfeng came. His arms were empty. He carried nothing at all.

Liu Ruyan’s lips trembled. “Niannian–where’s Niannian?”

Li Nanfeng crouched and half-knelt beside her. In a gentle voice, he said, “Ruyan… Niannian had a little accident. In the future, why don’t we have another child as adorable as Niannian?”

“Ah–”

Liu Ruyan went mad.

Rumors about the Li family raged through Haicheng’s upper circles, but no one guessed the truth.

After all, their circle had plenty of adulterers, scum, and beasts. But viciousness as outrageous as the male lead’s was truly beyond belief.

Meng Qingqing visited the hospital once to feast on the gossip.

In a conspiratorial whisper, she shared what she knew with Zhu Yin:

“…The Li family’s young master is gone, and that woman Liu Ruyan has gone mad…”

“I heard Liu Ruyan found out Mr. Li was cheating with his idealized love and took the child to confront them. Then, during the shoving, the child fell to the floor and died.”

“Oh, some people also say Wanwan’s son pushed the Li family’s young master down the stairs…”

She blinked her large eyes and looked at Zhu Yin with an eager thirst for knowledge. “Doctor, you work for the Li family. You must know something about what really happened, right?”

Zhu Yin pushed her head away without mercy. “No. I don’t know. Please leave.”

.

The female lead’s condition grew worse and worse. According to Barbara, she had begun hallucinating frequently, cradling her son’s little toys with a loving expression every day.

Whenever she briefly came to her senses, she screamed herself hoarse and cursed the male lead the moment she saw him.

The male lead was a born masochist. Back when Liu Ruyan had given him her whole heart and obeyed his every wish, he had remained unmoved.

Now that she cursed him every day, he only sank deeper, falling hopelessly in love with her.

Liu Ruyan truly hated him to the bone.

Once again, Zhu Yin did not understand. “She hates him this much, and the male lead has completely dropped his guard around her. If she truly wants revenge for her son, why kill herself? Kill Li Nanfeng, then kill his idealized love. Wouldn’t that avenge Niannian?”

Barbara trembled in fear. “…Host, let’s be a little more civilized. If she did that, there’d be no way to reach the ending.”

Oh. Zhu Yin remembered the two protagonists’ wishes.

The male lead: Clear up the misunderstanding with Ruyan and be together.

The female lead: Be together with the male lead, and have Niannian return to her side.

“Tsk.” Zhu Yin slowly rose, her black skirt spreading like the night. “Fine. Let’s hurry up and finish this mission. I’m sick of it.”

Late that night, she arrived at the villa where Liu Ruyan was confined.
