Chapter 50

Zhu Yin calmly regarded the man standing at her office door and sneered. “Mr. Li, come inside so we can talk.”

Li Nanfeng remained in the doorway.

He did not know why, but whenever he approached the doctor, inexplicable discomfort and faint fear arose within him. Even now, with her seated in her office, he only felt comfortable standing at the door.

Any closer was unbearable.

Zhu Yin naturally knew why he refused to move.

She continued sneering. “You see, Mr. Li? I merely asked you to come into my office for a proper discussion, and you won’t listen.”

She spread her hands. “I’m only a diligent doctor doing my job. Your wife and your dear female friend insist on seeing me. When I tell them not to come, they don’t listen either.”

These people were truly insane. If he had a problem, he should deal with them. Why harass an innocent doctor? The words were written plainly across her face.

But the deranged CEO focused on something peculiar. “What dear female friend?”

He glared at Zhu Yin and said coldly, “There is nothing improper between Wanwan and me. She is my friend, alone with a child, frail and pitiable. I merely cannot bear to see her suffer, so I care for her.”

Contempt filled his expression. “Doctor, I thought you were different from those crude, vulgar people. It appears I was wrong. You are just as shallow as they are.”

Startled, Zhu Yin immediately gulped down half a glass of water to steady herself.

“Please don’t, Mr. Li. You think far too highly of me.” She said sincerely, “Like every other foolish mortal, I’m shallow and vulgar.”

Even shallow mortals knew he treated his wife like dirt for the sake of his true love. Only those two considered their relationship innocent.

She wanted no part of Mr. Li’s approval. His stupidity might be contagious.

Li Nanfeng was furious, yet helpless against her impervious attitude.

He said irritably, “You meet Ruyan too often. It has made Wanwan anxious. She spends every night frightened and unable to sleep.”

He swiftly decided for Zhu Yin. “Go apologize to Wanwan now and promise you will do everything possible to treat her and Haohao, so she can stop worrying.”

Zhu Yin replied just as quickly, “No. I won’t.”

Even Barbara was perplexed. “If he doesn’t trust you, why doesn’t he simply fire you, Host? Even a system knows that a verbal promise without rules to enforce it has no effect.”

Zhu Yin stroked its little head and instructed, “Watch less of this world’s plot. I’m afraid too much of it will turn you into a little fool.”

She continued sneering at Li Nanfeng. “If you don’t trust me, Mr. Li, feel free to fire me.”

Sure enough, the male lead said nothing.

That was the power of the plot.

She had become the “doctor”: the highly skilled, ethically bankrupt physician who served the Li family and performed every dubious operation in the story.

The male lead would not fire her. The plot still needed this tool for many later events.

In the end, he slammed the door and left in a fury.

An hour later, the heroine–always remarkably well informed–arrived.

“I heard Nanfeng came to warn you.” Liu Ruyan looked deeply apologetic. “Have I come too often and caused you trouble?”

“Yes.” Resting her head on one hand, Zhu Yin said flatly, “Since you know, don’t come again.”

Liu Ruyan’s eyes instantly reddened. “But y-you’re my only friend. You’re the only one who lets me talk.”

Zhu Yin corrected her. “Wrong. You talk at me and use me as an emotional dumping ground.”

Liu Ruyan covered her face and fled, sobbing.

Less than half an hour later, the equally well-informed Wanwan arrived.

She clearly knew Liu Ruyan had left in tears and assumed the doctor had taken her side.

As though forgetting their unpleasant exchange days ago, she warmly tried to ingratiate herself with Zhu Yin.

Zhu Yin’s face remained stern. “Miss Idealized Love, if you want me to devote myself to treating you, it would be best if I never saw you outside the requirements of my job.”

Wanwan also covered her face and fled, sobbing.

This time, Zhu Yin set an alarm and watched a movie while counting down the minutes.

One hour later, the male lead stormed over from his company.

Before he could question her, Zhu Yin rose with a sneer. “Barbara, if the Central System wants to deduct points from your performance review, let it. I’ll compensate you with my salary from this world.”

Li Nanfeng frowned, unsure whom she was addressing. “Doctor, what have you done now–”

A mighty fist smashed squarely into his face.

“I’ve endured all of you long enough.” Dense darkness billowed behind Zhu Yin. “Three lunatics! I’ve slain the most wicked and chaotic monsters imaginable, and none of them were as deranged as you three!”

Barbara crouched under the desk, listening in terror as the male lead’s screams grew more miserable by the moment.

It pleaded shakily, “H-Host, be gentler. Don’t kill him!”

Zhu Yin tucked her loosened hair behind her ear, much of her pent-up frustration finally released. “Don’t worry. I know my limits.”

The male lead was only mortal and could not withstand a serious beating from her.

She was a peace-loving person who disliked fighting. These people had simply asked for it.

After using the male lead as a punching bag for twenty minutes, she calmly took from her pocket the little brass clock Barbara knew so well and gently nudged its hand.

The alarm on the desk ticked through its countdown. The computer screen showed the film she had just watched.

An enraged figure charged closer. “Doctor!”

He stopped abruptly at the office door.

Zhu Yin looked up. Refreshed after beating him, she no longer felt annoyed even at the sight of his face.

In a tranquil and remarkably friendly tone, she asked, “What is it, Mr. Li?”

Something was wrong.

Standing at the door and faced with the doctor’s rare gentleness, Li Nanfeng inexplicably retreated several steps.

For some reason, his face seemed to ache faintly. So did his body.

It felt as though every bone had been removed, then violently shoved back into place. His entire body clamored in pain.

Under the doctor’s clear, knowing gaze, Li Nanfeng took another step back and said quietly, “Nothing. I wanted to tell you that my assistant has transferred this month’s bonus.”

Zhu Yin nodded. “All right. Understood.”

“I’m busy, Mr. Li. If there’s nothing else, you may leave.”

Li Nanfeng obediently turned and departed. Only when he reached the hospital entrance did he abruptly realize something was wrong, and his face darkened.

Outrageous!

Which of them was the boss here?
