Chapter 17
Chapter 17
Wen Qiuye emerged with a dark expression and got into the car. Despite her best efforts to conceal it, traces of what had happened still showed.
Shen Xin had experienced Zhu Yin’s sharp tongue firsthand. One look at Wen Qiuye told him she had gained nothing.
He had never wanted to make this trip. “Zhu Yin wouldn’t cooperate, would she? I told you, the surveillance footage makes it perfectly clear that Zong lost control of the car and crashed into the guardrail himself. You insisted on coming here to make trouble for her.”
He did not tell Wen Qiuye that he had asked around about Zhu Yin. In truth, Old Mr. Shen at the old residence had arranged for her to serve as Shen Dongjun’s butler.
Shen Xin was Old Mr. Shen’s only son. The old man might look down on him, but he had always been generous to his son. Though Shen Xin was promiscuous, he still held some respect for the old man.
Out of respect for him, Shen Xin had decided not to pursue Zhu Yin’s earlier offense.
Wen Qiuye seethed inside, but showed only grievance on her face. “I’m old enough to be her elder. She showed me no respect at all.”
Shen Xin spoke honestly. “She belongs to Shen Dongjun’s household, and you’re my mistress. Expecting her to respect you is nothing but a daydream.”
Wen Qiuye stared at him in disbelief.
Shen Xin’s expression did not change. “What? Does it hurt to hear? Which part of what I said was wrong? Qiuye, you haven’t hidden your little schemes very well.”
He had never exposed them because he simply did not care.
But Zong had first made a fuss about entering the company. Now, for no apparent reason, he had targeted a butler from the Shen residence and landed himself in the hospital. They could no longer indulge him.
Shen Xin quickly made a decision. “Once Zong recovers, send him to Country F to stay with his sister.”
Wen Qiuye whipped her head around. “What do you mean?”
“I mean that Shen Group will belong only to Shen Dongjun. Even I have no chance at it. My illegitimate son has even less right to covet it.”
Rubbing his chin, Shen Xin added, “Oh, if Zong were clever enough to surpass even Shen Dongjun, perhaps the old man might value his talent. Unfortunately, he takes after both me and you.”
Wen Qiuye: “…”
She ought to have been furious, but Shen Xin had insulted himself in the same sentence, choking back her anger.
His words also left her deeply unsettled. She crumpled the handbag she had specially brought today in her hands.
After a long time, she squeezed out in a small voice, “Zong carries Shen family blood too.”
Shen Xin replied, “Wrong. Zong carries my blood, not the Shen family’s.”
Wen Qiuye: ?
Shen Xin said, “The old man is the one in charge of the Shen family now. Whoever he recognizes carries Shen family blood. After he passes, Shen Dongjun will be in charge.”
“Do you think that boy Shen Dongjun would acknowledge the children I fathered outside my marriage?”
Wen Qiuye dared not say anything against the old man, but Shen Dongjun–
“No matter what, you’re still his biological father.”
Shen Xin knew his own position. “Exactly. If I weren’t his biological father, once the old man passed away, I’d probably be thrown out too.”
Wen Qiuye: “…”
One look at her face told Shen Xin that everything he had said was wasted.
She had shared his bed for so many years, after all, so he warned her. “Behave yourself from now on. Stop provoking him. Otherwise, I’ll cancel your cards.”
“…”
Neither of them knew that when Wen Qiuye left, a spirit butterfly invisible to mortal eyes and glowing deep green settled on her head and entered the car with her.
The conversation between Wen Qiuye and Shen Xin also reached Zhu Yin’s ears.
The pair were now preparing to drive to the hospital to visit Wen Zong.
The spirit butterfly in Wen Qiuye’s hair gently fluttered its wings, releasing a deep-green glow.
Pain stabbed through Wen Qiuye’s eyes, and a pair of blood-red eyes abruptly appeared before her.
“Ah!” she screamed.
Shen Xin jumped. “What’s wrong–”
In his panic, he pressed the wrong pedal. Amid the shriek of brakes, the white luxury car plunged into the guardrail.
Wen Qiuye lost consciousness in a burst of intense pain.
.
“Another car accident?”
When Shen Dongjun received the news, his first reaction was to call Zhu Yin.
Unable to ask directly, he only said, “Shen Xin and Wen Qiuye were just in a car accident. Did you know?”
Zhu Yin replied, “Oh, I just heard they were going to visit their son, who was injured in a car accident. This is nice. The whole family will soon be reunited at the hospital.”
Shen Dongjun: “…”
Confirmed. This definitely had something to do with Zhu Yin.
He remained silent for a long while before saying, “When you come back, meet me in the study.”
It was already getting late. Zhu Yin returned to the Shen residence carrying a large quantity of packed food.
Only after she entered the study did Shen Dongjun ask, “Was it you?”
Zhu Yin admitted it readily. “Yes.”
Shen Dongjun’s expression was complicated.
When he first learned what Zhu Yin could do, Shen Dongjun worried that she might harm the Shen family.
Later, after discovering she had no such intention, he began to worry that her power was too great and that perhaps nothing in this world could restrain her.
That was a terrifying thought, even though Zhu Yin had shown only goodwill to those around her.
After these two accidents in quick succession, Shen Dongjun knew that what he had feared had finally happened.
She had caused two car accidents with casual ease and left the scenes so clean that not a trace remained. No matter who investigated, they would find nothing but accidents.
If she wanted someone dead, it would be just as easy.
“You don’t need to be afraid.”
Zhu Yin tilted her head at him. “I won’t hurt people without reason.”
Shen Dongjun’s expression was ugly. “Did you read my mind again?”
“Of course not,” Zhu Yin retorted. “Your expression is easy to read. There’s no need.”
She counted the reasons off for Shen Dongjun. “Wen Zong tried to frighten me with his car, so I taught him a little lesson. Today, that woman tried to hit me, so naturally I frightened her in return.”
Her tone suggested this was only logical, and her expression was equally righteous.
Shen Dongjun’s phone vibrated. His assistant reported that Wen Qiuye and Shen Xin had both regained consciousness. The examination showed they had been extraordinarily lucky. Both had only mild concussions, without even any serious abrasions.
Wen Qiuye merely seemed to have been badly frightened. One moment she claimed to have seen a terrifying pair of blood-red eyes; the next, she complained of stabbing pain in her eyes. The tests revealed nothing, so the symptoms were probably aftereffects of the concussion.
“…”
Shen Dongjun silently looked at Zhu Yin.
Zhu Yin asked, “Are the results in? They’re both fine, aren’t they? If someone doesn’t intend to kill me, I won’t kill them.”
Shen Dongjun said, “…Am I supposed to praise you for being reasonable?”
Zhu Yin gave a pleased snort. “I am reasonable!”
