Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Master Tian looked me up and down, then curled his lip. “Now that is quite the Asura Appearance. No wonder you dare wade into these muddy waters.”
“But kid, don’t think you can do whatever you want just because you’ve got a body full of bloodlust! You can’t touch these five coffins. If I say you can’t move them, then you won’t be moving them.”
I gripped the steel rebar and strode forward. No one dared block my way.
Master Tian only watched me out of the corner of his eye. I walked right past him and went straight to the pit where the five coffins had been dug up.
It was high noon, and the sunlight was blazing.
The excavated pit had no cover whatsoever. The five bright-red coffins lay exposed beneath the sun.
In truth, these five coffins had been buried in the ground for twenty years. The vermilion lacquer on their surfaces had long since become mottled and worn.
But perhaps because that paint had been there for so long, the color had seeped deep into the wood itself.
From a distance, the five coffins looked as if they had been soaking in blood, so ghastly no one dared stare at them for long.
I was just about to jump into the pit when an older worker stopped me.
His face was full of conflict, as if he did not know whether he should get involved.
In the end, though, he probably couldn’t get past his conscience. He warned me, “You’d better think this through. The two workers who dug up these five coffins before both had accidents.”
“One fell into a pile of bricks in broad daylight and broke several ribs. The other somehow jumped off the scaffolding in the middle of the night, and he’s still unconscious even now.”
“I understand. Thank you.” I thanked the worker, but still jumped into the pit.
The moment I got close to the five coffins, I caught a faint, barely discernible fragrance.
That scent made my heart tremble, because I had smelled it before-on Jiang Shuang.
Jiang Shuang and I had originally been complete strangers. I hadn’t come to help her this time for money, either.
Seven days ago, my daughter had gone downstairs to buy yogurt. A drunk driver drove his car right up onto the pedestrian crossing.
My daughter had just come out of the supermarket, and the car was already right in front of her.
She was only eleven. There was no way she could react in time.
By the time I received the news and rushed to the scene, my heart nearly flew out of my chest.
The ground was covered in shattered pieces of bumper and headlights. Harsh skid marks cut through a large pool of bright-red blood.
My wife had passed away early, leaving me with only a son and a daughter.
If something happened to my daughter too, I didn’t know what I would become.
But heaven had protected her. Aside from a few scrapes, my daughter was completely fine.
At that critical moment, a passing girl had thrown herself forward without regard for her own life and saved my daughter.
That girl was Jiang Shuang.
But when the ambulance arrived, Jiang Shuang was gone. All she left behind was a pool of blood on the ground.
I followed the dripping trail of blood to look for her, and it led me all the way to the rooftop of a nearby apartment building.
At that moment, Jiang Shuang was about to kill herself.
