Chapter 13
Chapter 13
This time, we finally made it safely to Xiaogu Village.
But it was a little late-already past nine at night.
Zhang Qing called the village chief who was in charge of receiving us, but after several tries, he still couldn’t get through.
Luckily, there was an inn at the entrance to the village, and it was kept surprisingly neat.
The owner was extremely warm and welcoming. The moment we reached the door, he greeted us and invited us inside.
Come to think of it, it was strange. No matter how you looked at this village, it seemed poor and tiny. Would there really be guests staying at an inn here on ordinary days?
I walked into the inn with misgivings, and while the owner was introducing the place, he told us that his family had been running it for more than twenty years.
Though the exterior was very old, it was obvious that the house had been built with solid materials from the start.
As we passed the first floor, we saw one of the rooms with the door open.
Inside, a woman with her hair pinned up was sitting on the bed. Her eyes were small and her mouth was large, giving her a somewhat strange appearance, and she was covered with a floral quilt.
The innkeeper hurried a couple of steps forward and shut the door, then turned back to us with a smile. “That’s my wife. She’s doing her confinement right now.”
After dark, I dozed lightly on the sofa outside Jiang Shuang’s room.
I couldn’t let Jiang Shuang be alone. I was afraid something would happen to her.
But I still let my guard down. Around midnight, I suddenly smelled that fragrance again!
Only this time, it was much stronger. It rushed straight into my nose, and I could hardly breathe.
I wanted to sit up, but then I suddenly realized I couldn’t move!
My mind began to drift dully, as if I was about to lose consciousness at any moment.
But reason told me this was wrong. I absolutely could not fall asleep.
Just then, I heard a series of footsteps.
It sounded like a lot of people were heading toward Jiang Shuang’s room.
I struggled against the drowsiness, and those people came to a stop in front of me.
A few shadows flickered before my eyes, and then I heard Fan Qian’s voice.
“No, you can’t touch him!”
Fan Qian seemed to be stopping someone. “This guy has already been registered with Sky-Gazing Platform. They made it clear that nobody is to lay a hand on him!”
My heart jolted.
Sky-Gazing Platform?
I had dealt with that group several times before. They were a bunch of crooked bastards who would do anything as long as you paid them.
Their organization had always been mysterious, and I hadn’t even known their name for very long.
What did Fan Qian mean by that?
Sky-Gazing Platform wouldn’t let anyone touch me?
Why? Weren’t we supposed to be enemies?
“But your master said-”
I was also very familiar with the voice speaking to Fan Qian. It was the innkeeper!
“My master said it doesn’t matter. He didn’t know this man was Long Changdong back then. If he had, he wouldn’t have dared.”
“Sky-Gazing Platform abandoned us for so many years. We don’t need to give them face. If we don’t get rid of this man, we’re just making trouble for ourselves.” This time, it was an old man speaking.
I could feel a dark shape raise up and smash down toward my head, but right now, even moving a finger was difficult!
“No-”
Fan Qian blocked that shadow again. “I don’t care what grudge you have against Sky-Gazing Platform. My master and I don’t want to offend those people!”
“If you insist on doing this, then this deal is off. Keep those five coffins and save them for your retirement!”
The innkeeper flew into a panic the moment he heard that.
He seemed to be pulling the old man back while trying to talk him out of it.
By then, I could barely stay conscious. I could only catch fragments like “money is what matters,” “the Jiang family girl,” and “finally found her again.”
In the end, I passed out completely.
