Chapter 1
Chapter 1
When I drove onto the construction site, the so-called expert known as Master Tian was already blocking the front of my truck with four or five hulking men.
“Kid, I’m warning you-don’t throw your life away for a few measly bucks!”
Master Tian wore a dark red Tang-style jacket. His hair was completely white, but his face was strangely full and ruddy, making it impossible to guess his age.
His eyes, however, were cloudy, like those of a man in his eighties or nineties. His mung-bean-sized pupils rolled around in their sockets, and the way he stared made my skin crawl.
“Uncle Long, maybe we should forget it. I don’t want to cause trouble for you.”
Jiang Shuang was curled up in the passenger seat. The poor girl was already on the verge of a breakdown, yet she was still worried about inconveniencing others.
Outside, the four or five burly men had already begun closing in around the front of the truck.
Master Tian’s disciple, a young man as scrawny as a monkey, bounced in place and shouted at me through the windshield, “My master is kindly giving you a warning! I’m telling you, don’t refuse a toast only to drink a forfeit!”
“Uncle Long-” Jiang Shuang was frightened. Her eyes reddened as she tried once more to persuade me to give up.
“Stay out of it. It’ll be fine,” I said, soothing her.
“Wait in the truck. Don’t get out.”
I opened the door and stepped down in two strides.
The men who had been surrounding us stopped dead in their tracks.
Maybe because I’d been sitting in the cab the whole time, they hadn’t gotten a good look at me.
I was born with an unusual appearance-frightening, really-and I was far taller and broader than an ordinary man. Ever since I was little, people had said I looked like Zhang Fei, or maybe Li Kui.
Those burly men were already a head taller than the workers around them, but in front of me, they still looked like overgrown children.
Each of them was carrying a rubber baton. I simply used what was at hand and pulled a steel rebar from the pile of materials beside me.
“Hey, hey, no fighting! No fighting!”
The site manager was named Zhang Qing. He had been scratching his head off to the side, but the moment he saw how things were escalating, he hurried forward to stop us.
“Gentlemen, gentlemen, let’s talk this out. Nice and easy.”
Zhang Qing was caught between a rock and a hard place.
Master Tian had been invited by the owner of the construction company, so Zhang Qing couldn’t afford to offend him.
On the other hand, everyone at the site was in a panic now, and no one was willing to work.
The workers were all whispering in private that the coffin with one missing corpse would start devouring people sooner or later, and if it wasn’t sent away soon, someone was bound to die.
On top of that, the police had already traced the original home of the five coffins. The four deceased still had clan relatives back in their hometown, and the police had asked the construction site to help send the coffins back.
But after so many strange incidents, none of the site’s drivers dared touch those five coffins, let alone transport them back.
A truck driver like me, showing up on their doorstep, was practically a gift from heaven.
If I left today, even Zhang Qing himself had no idea how much money it would take to find another driver willing to accept this job.
