Chapter 66
Chapter 66
“Teacher Li actually emerged from beyond the Divine Gate?” Qin Shiyu murmured.
She came from the Hall of Anomalies and had therefore heard certain top-secret information.
The Hall’s most precious anomalous entity was a fragment of the Divine Seal, an object capable of granting divine investiture to wild deities.
And the Divine Seal itself had fallen out from beyond the Divine Gate!
Even Nightmare had once obtained half of a broken feather that drifted out of that place. He had dreamed a dream, and the Dream Demon had been born within it.
She had even heard her teacher, Master Xu Buzhou, say that the only existence in the world capable of resisting the Black Mist Calamity stood beyond the Divine Gate!
Obtaining divine authority was the only way to approach that place.
That was why the Hall of Anomalies had previously wanted Frost to inherit the Water God’s Authority.
“Now it all makes sense…”
The countless questions in her heart seemed to find their answers at last.
Why could Li Que grant divine investiture to Lin Xiaoyu and the Dream Demon with nothing more than a certificate?
Why had he effortlessly crushed the mass of black mist at Five Dragons Mountain?
Because Li Que himself had emerged from beyond the Divine Gate!
“Those things in the darkness…”
Shi Xuan’s expression was equally grave. “So the things the Special Anomaly Investigation Bureau has been investigating really do exist?”
He had participated in some of the Bureau’s operations and knew a few scattered scraps of information.
It now seemed that the matters surrounding Li Que existed on a plane far beyond anything they had imagined.
“If that is true, then Senior Abyss’s proposal does make sense,” Qin Shiyu said slowly. She looked at Shi Xuan. “Even the Hall Master is exceedingly cautious when using the Divine Seal, for fear of attracting the gaze of certain mysterious existences.”
“Teacher Li has granted divine investiture to two gods in rapid succession. That really could draw those things here.”
Shi Xuan nodded gravely. He did not know what Li Que ultimately intended, but it was clear that Li Que’s ambitions were vast.
And the grander the plan, the more it needed what Abyss had offered: time.
“So you mean to hold those things back for Teacher Li for a while?” Shi Xuan asked, looking at Abyss.
Abyss nodded and sighed.
“Correct. So long as my young descendant can remain at Teacher Li’s side and escape his suffering, even my own death would be worthwhile.”
In a sense, Abyss was willing to do this to protect that descendant as well.
After all, if this place was noticed, his descendant would die soon after being sent here.
Shi Xuan immediately turned to Qin Shiyu. “Since Teacher Li has already agreed, all we need to do now is cooperate fully with Senior Abyss…”
Qin Shiyu nodded. “Agreed.”
“However, if Senior Abyss plans to remain at the school, will he need to take a position here like everyone else?”
She was uncertain how to handle this. Abyss was far too exceptional. His power was enough to crush even Nightmare.
Leng Qingyan took the initiative to explain.
“Teacher Li has always been role-playing an ordinary teacher. Lin Xiaoyu, Nightmare, and the others are his students. Dean Qin is the academic dean, while I hold the position of vice principal…”
Abyss’s eyes widened in surprise.
“He is role-playing an ordinary teacher?!”
“Role-playing… So the answer is role-playing!”
He froze in place. It was as though a question that had plagued him for countless years had finally been answered. Shock, sorrow, self-mockery, and a host of indescribable emotions flashed through his aged eyes.
“No wonder Teacher Li has gone unseen all these years. So role-playing is the method for avoiding the gaze of those things… That is the answer. That is truly the answer!”
Overcome with emotion, he shook his head. In the end, only boundless admiration remained on his face.
“Teacher Li truly sees farther than anyone!”
“Since this old man intends to stay, I naturally cannot disrupt Teacher Li’s plans.”
“Dean Qin, for the time being, I will guard Teacher Li’s gates and prevent those things from disturbing him. You may assign me whatever position you see fit.”
There was not a trace of hesitation in his voice. His resolve was absolute.
Qin Shiyu’s expression turned complicated.
She had assumed that an anomaly of Abyss’s standing would resist the idea of taking a job at the school.
She had never expected him to embrace it so readily.
And his words had finally made her understand why someone as powerful as Li Que spent every day role-playing an ordinary teacher.
She had once thought it was simply his method of bestowing humanity upon anomalies.
Now she realized her understanding had been far too shallow. She had seen only the first layer, while a deeper mystery lay beneath it!
She sighed in wonder. After thinking for a moment, she said, “Very well. You’ll be staying at the school to guard the entrance for Teacher Li… In that case, how about security guard?”
Shi Xuan, Leng Qingyan, and the others almost lost their composure.
An ancient SSS-class wild deity serving as a security guard at Mingjiang No. 7 Special School?
Wasn’t that going a little too far?
“An excellent position. Thank you.” Abyss nodded. “From now on… everyone may call me Shen Yuan.”
He readily went along with the arrangement and adapted with remarkable speed. “Dean Qin, Vice Principal Leng, we should return to the auditorium.”
His manner toward Qin Shiyu and Leng Qingyan even carried a trace of respect.
Leng Qingyan went numb.
All of a sudden, her position as vice principal felt like a seat covered in needles.
At first, there had only been the A-class Wraith-Mother of the Vengeful Infant. Then the SS-class Nightmare had arrived as dorm supervisor.
And now an SSS-class security guard had appeared?!
“All right!”
Her expression was complicated, but she could only agree.
…
Inside the auditorium, Li Buhai and the others looked exceedingly grave.
“What in the world is happening? What does Abyss want to discuss with them?”
“The mastermind here must be extraordinary. He actually possesses the standing to speak with Abyss!”
Confusion appeared in Yin Rumei’s eyes as well. She slowly relaxed her grip on the anomalous entity in her hand, then stared at the backstage door with even greater puzzlement.
Could this member of the Refugees really retain enough power to intimidate the SSS-class Abyss?
“Impossible! They’re all going to die! Every last one of them!”
Sun Xingsheng alone continued gnashing his teeth. He wished he could slaughter everyone that very instant.
The door to the guest lounge opened.
Qin Shiyu, Shi Xuan, and the others emerged, followed by the bald old man.
“Abyss! Kill them! Hurry up and kill them all!” Sun Xingsheng shouted.
Abyss’s appearance had broken Nightmare’s hold over them, restoring Sun Xingsheng’s freedom. He glared hatefully at the others.
“Kill every last one of them! I’ll have the Hall Master of the Hall of Anomalies grant you divine investiture! Your descendant might even return to the Divine Gate one day! I order you to kill them all!”
Abyss merely gave him an icy glance, then turned to Qin Shiyu and the others.
“Vice Principal Leng, Dean Qin, this man is shouting and causing a disturbance. Would you like me to discipline him?”
His words were respectful and his posture humble, yet a strange excitement gleamed in his aged eyes.
He had finally discovered a method to avoid being noticed. He could hardly wait to assume the role of security guard and put it to the test!
His question left everyone else even more stunned. They stared at Abyss in utter disbelief.
“Am I… hearing things?”
Everyone was completely dumbfounded.
