Chapter 22

Roll, roll, roll…

Qiao Yu’s heart nearly stopped at the forceful slam of the door, and the head on his neck once again tumbled off uncontrollably.

While he wasn’t afraid of ghosts or the supernatural, he possessed a naturally jumpy constitution, especially prone to being startled by sudden incidents.

Qiao Yu’s head rolled across the floor, anxious to get back to his body, but the surroundings were pitch black. The floor was covered in a thick layer of ash that had accumulated over who knows how long, making him cough incessantly.

-It’s so dark, I’m scared~

-LMAO, the guy above me is actually afraid of the dark. I’m dying.

-Is our little beauty afraid of the dark? Do you want big brother to come save you?

-Confirmed, the guy above is a ghost. I’ve already gathered the evidence.

-Why hasn’t the streamer turned on the light yet? Has he not found the switch?

-Holy crap, what was that thing that just flashed by?!

-You’re not alone, I think my eyes were playing tricks on me…

-What? What thing??

-Quiet, let me look again.

Qiao Yu knew where the light switch was, but he couldn’t turn it on. As he moved, he bumped into something, and a piercing light flared up beneath his neck. He immediately rolled his head away, scurrying out of the light’s reach.

Since no one touched the phone on the ground for ten seconds, the screen flickered and went black.

Qiao Yu breathed a sigh of relief, reached out, picked up his head, and pressed it back onto his neck.

Click-

A pale white light cast down from above. Qiao Yu pretended to rub his forehead in pain. “That fall nearly killed me. Why doesn’t Doctor Zhuang ever clean his room?”

He reappeared in the Live Stream Room with a dirty little face, then let out a feigned gasp of surprise. “Where did this phone come from?”

He then picked up the phone from the floor.

The phone was locked, requiring a fingerprint or a passcode to open. Qiao Yu pressed the screen off, giving up on any amateur attempts to crack the code.

-For some reason, this feels like he’s just burying his head in the sand.

-I don’t know why, but I suddenly feel incredibly anxious~

-Someone get the lady above a bowl of brown rice and Job’s tears soup to calm her nerves.

-What are you guys talking about?

-Same question. I have no idea what riddles you two are speaking in.

-Not sure, let’s keep watching.

-Keep watching? Do you even have eyes to watch with? You’re just a scallion with its head cut off-pretending to be garlic!

-Hey, don’t get personal. I didn’t even mention that you don’t have ears!

-You’re the one without ears! I’m reporting you for ghost-on-ghost harassment!

-Go ahead, I’m not afraid of you.

Blah blah blah, yak yak yak…

The popularity of Qiao Yu’s Live Stream Room was unprecedented for a newcomer, with over 9,000 viewers online in real-time. Naturally, with more people came more trouble; for some reason, they had suddenly started bickering.

Between those watching the drama and those fanning the flames, not a single one of them was a saint. Furthermore, his tipped gold coin balance remained stuck at 99-not a single cent more.

There sure were a lot of freeloaders these days.

Qiao Yu couldn’t be bothered with them. Holding the phone, he scanned the room. There were no signs of anyone living here; every piece of furniture was covered in a thick layer of dust. This sense of eeriness was deeply unsettling.

“Family, is it possible that Doctor Zhuang doesn’t actually exist?”

Among the barrage of insults in the comments, a few lines stood out as remarkably refined.

-Are you asking us??

-Even if we knew, we wouldn’t tell you.

-He exists.

Qiao Yu looked around. No matter how he looked at it, this place seemed like it hadn’t been inhabited for a long time. He couldn’t help but ask curiously, “Then what kind of person is he?”

-He is the electricity, the light, the only myth.
-It’s your daddy.

-He’s not human.

Qiao Yu knew he wouldn’t get anything out of them. He clicked his tongue. “A bunch of trolls!”

After speaking, he ignored the frantic output from the viewers in the Live Stream Room and turned his attention to the bookshelf.

In the entire room, the bookshelf was the only area that was clean and tidy, as if the owner consulted it constantly.

Qiao Yu casually leafed through the books on the shelf: “Use and Maintenance of Medical Equipment,” “Full-Color Human Anatomy,” “Pulse Diagnosis-Easy to Learn, Impossible to Master,” “Crash Course in Prescriptions (Accuracy Not Guaranteed),” “Better to Seek Help from Yourself than a Doctor”…

It seemed this Doctor Zhuang’s medical skills weren’t exactly reliable.

His eyes quickly scanned past that row of useless books and discovered a sky-blue folder.

Qiao Yu pulled it out and flipped it open, discovering it was a collection of medical records.

Fortunately, they were all printed. If they had been written in Doctor Zhuang’s chicken-scratch handwriting, he definitely would have torn the folder apart.

Name: 4002.

What did that mean? Did it refer to the resident of Room 4002?

[Name: 4002. Gender: Male. Blood Type: O. Age: 29. Clinical Diagnosis: Horizontal bone on the forehead, eyes with a distant gaze; destined for longevity. Treatment Subject: Freezing]

[Name: 4003. Gender: Male. Blood Type: O. Age: 31. Clinical Diagnosis: Excess skin on the neck, eyes and brows like swords; destined for longevity. Treatment Subject: Skinning]

[Name: 4005. Gender: Male. Blood Type: O. Age: 25. Clinical Diagnosis: Solitary peak nose, long nose and ears; destined for longevity. Treatment Subject: Dismemberment]

[Name: 4006. Gender: Male. Blood Type: O. Age: 33. Clinical Diagnosis: Cheekbones extending to the ears, long hairs at the end of the eyebrows; destined for longevity. Treatment Subject: Sealing]

[Name: 4007. Gender: Male. Blood Type: O. Age: 23. Clinical Diagnosis: Hairs in the ears, voice high and piercing; destined for longevity. Treatment Subject: Electrocution]

[Name: 4008. Gender: Male. Blood Type: O. Age: 27. Clinical Diagnosis: Head shaped like an overturned boat, teeth strong and long; destined for longevity. Treatment Subject: Decapitation]

[Name: 4009. Gender: Male. Blood Type: O. Age: 35. Clinical Diagnosis: Crane-like form and tortoise-like breathing, rhinoceros-like single bone rising; destined for longevity. Treatment Subject: Confinement]

Qiao Yu didn’t understand the first parts, but he had a vague idea about the last two.

Room 4008… Decapitation… The human head.

Room 4009… Confinement… The long hair.

The “Treatment Subject” was the cause of death for the original room owners, and it was also the future cause of death for the streamers.

Qiao Yu quickly flipped back a couple of pages in the records.

Room 4005… Dismemberment… The bloody water in the pipes.

Motherfucker, so the dismembered parts were being washed down the drain!

Qiao Yu finally felt a slight threat of death, but only a slight one.

He continued flipping forward. Finally, he saw familiar names instead of room numbers.

[Name: Li Xiaoqin. Gender: Female. Blood Type: O. Age: 34. Clinical Diagnosis: Yin-Time Woman. Treatment Subject: Medium]

He didn’t get it. This was already outside his area of expertise.

Qiao Yu kept flipping.

Only the last medical record remained.

[Name: Hou Yong. Gender: Male. Blood Type: A (Does not meet criteria). Age: 36 (Even number).]

Clinical Diagnosis…

Suddenly, a clear sound of footsteps came from outside the door, followed by the clinking of metal. The newcomer unhurriedly turned the key. Click-the door to Room 4001 was opened from the outside.
