Chapter 6

The butler’s expression shifted several times, and sweat slowly gathered on his forehead. Then he gave me an honest, simple smile.

I glanced at the villa’s security cameras and smiled faintly.

What security footage did I have? The original owner didn’t even have a phone. If she did, I wouldn’t have had to come all the way here in person. The nearest bus stop was several miles away, and I had practically walked myself dizzy before I finally reached Gu Yi.

But that didn’t matter. The villa had cameras, and the butler didn’t know I didn’t have a phone. He had no idea whether I’d recorded anything or not.

The butler also glanced at the cameras, then let out a helpless sigh and politely saw me off.

I gave him the address, then fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes, we had already arrived outside the urban village.

I got out of the car.

The butler looked like he wanted to say something, then hesitated. “Miss Lin, about the recording… please wait a little. Don’t release it for now. If only for the young master’s sake.”

“Fine. Don’t make me wait too long.” I let out a derisive laugh, turned, and left.

When I returned to the cramped rental room, Grandma was sorting cardboard boxes.

When she saw me, she asked where I’d gone that afternoon.

I smiled and said it was nothing, then sorted the cardboard boxes with her.

The original owner loved this tiny old lady very much.

They had both lost the family member they shared, and they depended on each other to survive.

For this tiny old lady, the original owner could risk her life and swallow every bit of suffering.

But she didn’t know that after the vicious supporting female character told this old lady everything her granddaughter had done for her, the old lady personally pulled out her own oxygen tube and left this world with tears of heartache hanging at the corners of her eyes.

A bond of family love that went both ways-enough to make anyone tear up.

Now that I’d transmigrated here, I didn’t want to walk the path of an abused novel heroine, and I didn’t want this tiny old lady to suffer anymore.

In the book, the original owner was young. She had no ability or means to make money, so she could only take shortcuts to obtain wealth.

But now, inside her body was the soul of a twenty-eight-year-old who had already been ground down by society, argued with coworkers, slammed tables at bosses, and had at least a little ability and finesse when it came to making a living-not to mention plenty of time to plan for the future.

I thought I could let this tiny old lady, who had suffered her whole life, finally enjoy some happiness.

A few days later, during a break between classes, Gu Yi came looking for me.

His face looked tired, and those clear black-and-white eyes of his hid countless worries.

He seemed hesitant.

“My grandfather wants to see you. Are you free?”

In the original text, Grandpa Gu’s character setting was that of a big shot in poor health, struggling to keep the family business going.

He didn’t appear many times, and usually only showed up briefly under two circumstances.

One was when his son caused trouble.

He would lean on his cane and curse, “You wretched thing.”

The other was when his grandson caused trouble.

He would lie back in his rocking chair and offer shrewd guidance: “You’re still too young.”

I didn’t have a particularly good impression of the old man. He looked impressive on the surface, but in reality, his son was useless, his grandson was useless, and the family business collapsed. What exactly had he schemed for his entire life?

I didn’t get it.

But he recognized Gu Yi’s worth and raised Gu Yi as his only heir, without taking those illegitimate sons seriously. That much, at least, deserved praise.

I refused. “I’m not going.”

Gu Yi froze.

He lowered his eyes. His long lashes trembled slightly, and his voice dimmed, but he didn’t pester me.

“Okay. I understand.”

I sighed helplessly. “Why don’t you ask me why?”

Gu Yi pressed his lips together. It seemed like he really hadn’t thought to ask me why.

See? This was why you couldn’t let a kid study sixteen hours a day. It had made him stupid. He didn’t even understand basic social interaction.

I looked at him quietly, waiting for him to ask.

Finally, he opened his mouth and said, “Why?”

The villain was rich, but depressed.

I was poor, and worse, I was the heroine of an angst novel.

My parents were destined to die, leaving me and my grandmother to depend on each...
