Chapter 3
Chapter 3
When I woke up, I was at the Gu residence.
Gu Yi was in the middle of being beaten by his mother.
“What is your relationship with her? Why did you bring her home?”
“Are you dating behind my back? No wonder you can’t beat Xie Xun on exams.”
“You’re not as smart as him, and you don’t even work as hard as him. What use is there in me raising a piece of trash like you?”
“Even if you’re going to date someone, why would you pick someone ugly and poor?”
“The girls around Xie Xun are all rich, fair-skinned beauties, and then there’s useless you, dating some ugly bitch before you’re even grown.”
I woke up in a daze and was forced to listen to all of that.
Staring blankly at the ceiling, I thought helplessly, Why do people with values this warped insist on having children? Does she not know that when you have a child, you’re responsible for them?
With what little strength I had, I tossed a throw pillow at Gu’s Mother’s feet.
Stop fighting already. Hurry up and give me some candy. I feel like I’m not going to make it…
Gu’s Mother stopped and glared at me.
“So shameless at such a young age, seducing my son. Why don’t you take a look at yourself and see if you’re worthy?”
She charged over, ready to hit me.
Gu Yi hurriedly blocked her. Her slap landed on his face instead.
His face, already red and swollen, swelled even more. His voice was low, almost pleading. “Mom, just hit me. Don’t hit her.”
Gu’s Mother stared furiously at Gu Yi, then looked at him, then at me. As if something occurred to her, she let out a laugh-and then came a towering rage.
“Playing the hero to save the beauty? Why don’t you look at what you are, and what she is? You’re an idiot saving an ugly bitch. Stop disgusting me.”
“How did I ever raise a useless thing like you?”
She raised her hand and began beating Gu Yi in a frenzy, venting her emotions like a madwoman, defending her authority.
It was as if the person standing in front of her wasn’t her child, but her enemy.
At last, I understood why the thirty-year-old Gu Yi had leapt from a rooftop the day he lost to Xie Xun.
Clearly, he still had a chance to turn things around. Clearly, if he had just kept living, he would have lived to see the industry’s blue-ocean era arrive.
But he jumped anyway.
Maybe long before that, he had already imagined that fall countless times and forced the thought back down countless times. It was just that, on that occasion, he couldn’t hold on any longer.
I half-crawled, half-tumbled off the sofa, reached out for a mandarin orange, peeled it, and wolfed it down. Once I recovered a little strength, I grabbed the ashtray and hurled it with all my might, smashing it into Gu’s Mother’s leg.
I thought I heard a crack.
Gu’s Mother screamed and toppled sideways toward Gu Yi on her twisted leg.
Gu Yi instinctively reached out to catch her.
Gu’s Mother’s face twisted in pain. “My leg… It hurts so much.”
After that, everything descended into chaos.
The butler called a doctor.
The doctor’s diagnosis: a fracture.
When Gu’s Mother heard the news, she started screaming that she wanted to call the police and have me arrested, that I had to pay the price.
Gu Yi stopped the butler, silently let me leave, and even took a bag of candy from the house and handed it to me.
“If you have low blood sugar, keep more candy in your pockets from now on.”
The truth was, he hadn’t really wanted to bring me home.
But it was too hard to find a store in the villa district, and waiting for a taxi would take a long time too. He had no choice but to brace himself and bring me back to his house, and then all of this happened.
He had explained that I wasn’t his girlfriend.
But Gu’s Mother didn’t believe him. On the contrary, it only made her angrier. She thought he was lying.
She stubbornly branded her son a liar rather than believe he had been doing a good deed.
I looked at the candy, feeling complicated.
Actually, the original owner always kept fruit candy in her pockets.
But wasn’t it strange? As long as she ran into a member of the main cast, that fruit candy was guaranteed to have run out.
Hahahahaha!
Because of that, the original owner often fainted in front of Xie Xun, leading him to think she was some scheming girl throwing herself at him.
Even later on, after Xie Xun knew that Lin Shiran was severely malnourished, he still looked down on her. He thought she was poor, had no self-respect, and would do any degrading thing for money.
And yet, he just had to develop feelings for her. He refused to admit he could like a low-class, disgraceful woman, so he tormented her even more, as though that was the only way to salvage his masculine pride.
What a pretentious, trashy bastard. Anyone who can come up with degrading things for others to do is garbage.
