Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I stared at her.
A flicker of embarrassment at being exposed slid across Gu’s Mother’s face, along with a secret, smug satisfaction.
Just as I thought. I’d cursed her out so thoroughly, yet she hadn’t lost her temper. So it was because Gu Yi loved her, and that had made her happy.
Flustered and furious, she changed the subject.
“If you have something to say, say it. Stop stalling.”
“Fine. Then let’s talk about when Gu Yi is going to die. My guess is, on the day he turns thirty, he’ll jump off a building and splat-turn into a puddle of meat paste…”
“Shut up, shut up, shut your mouth!!” A pillow came flying at me. I dodged sideways as Gu’s Mother screamed, frantically refuting me. “My son won’t die even if you do! Who gave you the right to curse my son?”
Her eyes were bloodshot, her expression deranged, as if I had killed Gu Yi with my own hands.
I watched her coldly. I waited for her to finish venting, for her to stop, then delivered the fatal blow.
“Which one of the things you’re doing right now isn’t pushing him toward death?”
“You hate Xie Xun’s father for not marrying you, so you want to prove he was wrong.”
“You know you’re not good enough for Xie Xun’s father, and you can’t beat Xie Xun’s mother, so you want to beat her through your son.”
“You’ve worked yourself to death pushing Gu Yi, wanting him to win glory for you. Why don’t you think about what you were like at sixteen? Could you even compare to Gu Yi?”
“Timid and submissive outside, ruthless at home.”
“Gu Yi is already working so hard, but it’s like your eyes are blind. You can’t see it at all.”
“All you see is that he can’t outscore Xie Xun. You don’t see that he studies more than sixteen hours a day.”
“You see Xie Xun winning awards. You don’t see that Madam Xie never hits or curses her child.”
“You see your own grievances. You don’t see that Gu Yi would rather hurt himself than hurt you.”
“You don’t have the ability to expand outward or build a career. All you know how to do is pour that brute force into your child.”
“Because children are born loving their parents. They’re born trusting authority.”
“The more you take your anger out on Gu Yi, the more it proves how useless you are. You can only throw your weight around at home. You can only control the people who love you.”
“People like you are truly terrifying. Whoever loves you has the worst luck in the world.”
“Thank God you’re not my mom. If you were, I’d fight you ten times a day. Either you die, or we go down together.”
“Gu Yi shouldn’t be called Gu Yi. He should be called Gu Nan. The moment he reincarnated into your belly, he started life on hell mode.”
“He’s clearly self-harming, but all you care about is how he dared to die without your permission.”
“He’s clearly doing a good deed. A normal mom would praise him and say, ‘My son is amazing.’ An abnormal mom would only call her son a lying little brat.”
“He’s clearly working so hard. A normal mom would tell her child not to put too much pressure on himself. An abnormal mom would only call her child trash.”
“You don’t have the ability to raise a child, yet you have no self-awareness. You’re paranoid, conceited, and hypocritical. Having a mother like you is eight lifetimes’ worth of bad luck for him.”
Gu’s Mother’s breathing grew rapid. She pointed a finger at me, her eyes rolled back, and she fainted.
I opened the door. Gu Yi was standing there with red-rimmed eyes, wiping away tears. He turned his head and quickly rubbed them away, not letting me see.
I walked past him and called out, “Doctor, please come here. The person inside fainted.”
The family doctor came jogging over. After an examination, he said it was respiratory alkalosis and hurriedly grabbed a plastic bag to cover Gu’s Mother’s head.
The butler quickly prepared the car and had the driver take Gu’s Mother to the hospital.
Gu Yi rushed after them.
I watched them leave, then glanced at the butler and smiled.
The butler stiffened.
I said mildly, “Today’s incident got a little out of hand. There’s no way it’ll stay hidden. Have you thought about how you’re going to explain yourself to the old man?”
