Chapter 77
Chapter 77
The wind on the rooftop was fierce.
A young man in a white coat stood at the edge of the hospital roof, his employee badge still hanging around his neck as he looked down at the buildings below.
He held a suicide note and a thick stack of documents.
His eyes were filled with despair and bitter unwillingness.
“Dad… Mom…”
He murmured their names and struggled over the railing, moving half his body beyond it.
“You told me to become a doctor. You said doctors healed the sick, saved lives, and accumulated virtue through good deeds…”
“Then why is everything so different from what you said?”
He swallowed. The cold wind cut painfully across his face, but he showed no fear. Instead, he felt the relief of someone about to be freed.
“I tried my best. I can’t beat those people. Their network is too deep and tangled, and their eyes are everywhere…”
“This place is too disgusting and too dark. I can’t see any hope…”
“If my death can warn the public and show them what’s happening, maybe it will still have some value…”
The young man drew a deep breath and brought his other leg over the railing.
He stood at the outermost edge and raised his head, looking at the blue sky one final time.
The clustered clouds looked soft, allowing him to briefly forget his troubles.
“Dad, Mom, I’m sorry. I failed you… I’ll take care of you in my next life.”
He silently repeated the words, squeezed his eyes shut, fought against his body’s instinctive fear of death, and took a resolute step forward with the documents in his arms.
Yet he did not move.
“Huh?”
He opened his eyes in confusion and discovered someone gripping his shoulder.
The person holding him was a brightly smiling young man.
Qin Lan grinned. “Buddy, you haven’t seen the news yet, have you?”
“The main Qianshan Hospital and several of its branches have been sealed by the United Government. Didn’t you know?”
The young man froze. He rubbed his eyes, thinking he might be hallucinating.
“Here, take a look.” Qin Lan pulled a phone from his pocket, opened the day’s top headline, and showed him the bold words across the screen. “See? I wasn’t lying.”
The young man read the report again and again, as though trying to chew over every word, terrified that he had misunderstood something.
The photographs were perfectly clear. He would never forget the face of the arrested Director Wang.
“How could… How could this happen so suddenly…?”
The young man felt as though he had fallen into a dream.
Qin Lan smiled. “Good thing I arrived in time… I heard you’ve collected a lot of evidence about illegal practices and misconduct inside the hospital.”
“Give it to me. I’ll help you add more fuel to the fire burning Qianshan Hospital.”
Once Qin Lan finished negotiating with Yuan Risheng, the Qian Group’s fate was sealed.
As though afraid Qin Lan might change his mind, Yuan Risheng moved extraordinarily quickly. He issued a public statement to the media while deploying United Government forces to seize every asset owned by the Qian Group.
On television, Yuan Risheng looked heartbroken. “…The Qian Group’s actions are an insult to the laws and regulations of this Safe Zone and a grave threat to our harmonious lives…”
“…We will never allow such a thing to happen again. We will…”
Sacrificing one Qian Group was an excellent outcome compared with letting a madman assassinate government officials one by one.
Every crime could be placed on the unfortunate group.
Early that morning, the Qian Group’s chairman was still in bed holding a woman twenty years younger than himself when armed guards burst in and pressed a gun barrel to his forehead.
Before he understood what was happening, they dragged him out of bed like a dog.
Qin Lan had not been idle either. He visited several other Qianshan Hospital branches and extracted a great deal of information from their senior staff with only a few threats.
During those visits, Qin Lan learned that the young doctor before him had been trying to fight the hospital’s corrupt system alone.
That was how he arrived in time to stop him.
The young man’s documents contained a great deal of evidence. They were not as explosive as the material Qin Lan had collected, but they were enough to add several more names to the execution list.
As for the Safe Zone’s other factions…
The moment they heard that Qin Lan would come after them unless the Qian Group fell, they became extraordinarily enthusiastic. Every one of them wished the Qian Group would explode on the spot.
Some assets had not even been officially sealed before anonymous, public-spirited citizens helpfully brought them under control for the United Government.
Every powerful figure in the Safe Zone had heard that a madman was targeting the Qian Group and would bite anyone who objected.
None of them wanted to sacrifice a pound of their own flesh.
Meanwhile, one particularly unfortunate young man was still enjoying his wonderful university life.
Young Master Qian Youquan had been living splendidly.
Soon after school began, he established himself as the brilliant, wealthy future ruler of a major corporation and captivated countless female students.
Qian Youquan was reasonably handsome. Good genes had given him an attractive face, and his extraordinary family wealth only magnified his appeal.
His sole regret was that Su Xiaoyue, the woman of his dreams, was now completely beyond his reach.
After joining the Elite Program, Su Xiaoyue became one of the academy’s most important students.
Even if she merely graduated normally, she could enter the United Government in the Central Region directly. Her future was limitless.
Qian Youquan had once spent heavily to hire several men. When Su Xiaoyue went shopping with her roommates, they were supposed to stage a crude attack so he could appear and rescue her.
Instead, several anomalies that should have been in the Fallen Zone appeared from nowhere and slaughtered the men.
No matter how hard Qian Youquan thought, he could not understand how anomalies had appeared inside a Safe Zone.
It made no sense whatsoever.
Young Master Qian had since come to terms with reality. The university had plenty of beautiful women besides Su Xiaoyue. Why obsess over only one?
So today, he had dressed especially well.
He planned to drive his limited-edition Aston Bulltin to meet a senior student he had recently met for an intense session of exercise for two.
“Ah, what a wonderful life…”
After fastening his seat belt, Qian Youquan swallowed the Vigor Pill he had prepared. He calculated that it would take effect in about an hour. Perfect timing.
He was about to start the car when a message arrived.
One glance sent him into ecstasy. “What?!”
“Father is transferring the corporation directly to me?!”
“Holy shit!”
Qian Youquan felt as if electricity were surging through his entire body.
He instantly forgot about the senior student and her black stockings. He slammed down the accelerator and raced toward the airport.
No matter how rich he had been before, he was still only the future heir. He could access only a tiny fraction of the corporation’s businesses and funds.
But if he took control of the entire group…
He could spend every day entertaining twenty senior students at once!
“Damn, has that old man finally come to his senses? He’s really willing to hand me the corporation?”
“Hahahahahaha!”
“I’m finally about to reach the pinnacle of life!”
Overflowing with excitement, Qian Youquan reached the airport as quickly as possible.
Then…
Police officers who had been waiting for a long time slammed him to the ground.
What was going on?
Wasn’t he moments away from taking control of an unimaginable fortune and returning in triumph?
What did they mean by, “Your father is dead, the corporation has collapsed, and now you can wait for prison”?
