Chapter 60

Wang Lei staggered to his feet and touched his nose.

Two warm streams of blood ran from his nostrils and dripped onto his collar.

His face burned with pain–an area of pain roughly the size of two shoe soles.

Only then did Wang Lei finally realize that someone had kicked him in the face.

“What?!”

“As expected of No. 1 High School’s top student! You took my Heavenly Crippling Kick without a scratch!”

“I can’t beat you, so I’m out of here, bro.”

Qin Lan’s expression turned solemn. Then he spun around and ran, his movements smooth and decisive.

After a brief moment of shock, Wang Lei came back to his senses and exploded with rage.

If he had worn his hair long instead of in a buzz cut, every strand would have stood on end.

“Captain, are you all right?”

“Are you hurt, Captain?”

The students around him panicked. None had expected the other side to land a successful sneak attack.

Wang Lei covered his face. Smoldering fury clogged his chest with nowhere to escape, making it feel ready to burst.

“Catch him!”

“I’m going to cripple that bastard!”

His teammates did not dare delay. The moment Wang Lei gave the order, they raced after Qin Lan.

“He dared kick me in the face… He’s dead!”

Wang Lei’s expression was livid, and his gaze turned venomous.

“He’s fast, but there was no power behind that attack…”

“When did No. 3 High School find someone like him?”

Aside from the burning pain, Wang Lei had suffered no serious injury after taking the kick directly to the face.

He instinctively concluded that Qin Lan specialized only in Speed.

“If he hadn’t distracted me, he might not have landed that sneak attack at all… Hmph. Those idiots from No. 3 High School know nothing but cheap tricks…”

Wang Lei wiped away the blood and joined the pursuit.

He had considered the possibility of an ambush ahead, but so what?

Wang Lei had never regarded the students from No. 3 High School as threats.

His Talent granted him exceptionally versatile combat capabilities. Even if the enemy surrounded him, he could escape with ease.

“You think you can defeat me like this? Ridiculous!”

“I’ll show you that petty schemes are meaningless before absolute strength!”

Wang Lei gradually accelerated, his gaze growing more vicious.

He had already decided to smash every tooth out of that shameless coward’s mouth once he caught him.

The simulated instance would automatically eject anyone whose vital signs crossed the safety threshold. But if Wang Lei controlled the severity of the injuries, he could torture Qin Lan without allowing him to leave.

That had been Wang Lei’s plan from the beginning.

Before the joint examination, he had learned the composition of No. 3 High School’s team and understood that they had chosen their lineup to target him.

After discussing the matter, Wang Lei and his teammates unanimously decided to leave No. 3 High School with an unforgettable memory.

Not far ahead, Qin Lan deliberately slowed down. He allowed several attacks from behind to hit him and released remarkably convincing screams.

In reality, he had not lost a single hair.

To Qin Lan, these attacks were even less effective than the Slit-Mouthed Woman’s bad breath.

The pursuers brightened when they saw him stumble.

Some wondered why Qin Lan could still run so quickly while screaming so miserably, but no one paid the discrepancy much attention.

Soon, Qin Lan rounded a corner, “ran out of stamina,” and pitched forward onto the floor.

“Keep running. Weren’t you fast a moment ago?”

Wang Lei quickly caught up. A vicious smile spread across his face when he saw Qin Lan in such a pathetic state.

Of course, he also saw Liang Yu and the others waiting nearby.

The moment Wang Lei appeared, Liang Yu’s expression darkened.
Zhang Ke almost charged forward, but Liang Yu raised an arm to stop him.

“I don’t know whether to praise your courage or mock your stupidity…” Wang Lei sneered as he approached. “You think an ambush is enough to defeat me? Do you have no self-awareness at all?”

His eyes held nothing but contempt. He did not believe these people could threaten him.

Several young men behind Wang Lei closed in with vicious smiles.

“You all gathered in one place. That saves us a lot of effort…”

“What a pack of idiots!”

Each activated his Talent. The instant Wang Lei gave the order, they would pounce like starving hyenas.

By now, most of them had forgotten Qin Lan, who still lay motionless on the floor.

Liang Yu said nothing. She discreetly glanced down.

Only after she saw Qin Lan secretly make an “OK” gesture did she relax.

The show was about to begin.

“Wang Lei.” Liang Yu spoke coldly, suppressing the fury in her eyes. “Do you remember the boy whose leg you broke?”

“He never provoked you. You happened to meet him outside school, made up an excuse, and surrounded him with your friends…”

“Don’t you feel any remorse?”

Wang Lei exchanged a glance with his companions, then burst into unrestrained laughter.

“Who? I don’t remember him at all…” Wang Lei grinned carelessly. “No. 3 High School has too many worthless nobodies. I can’t keep track of them all.”

He rubbed his buzz cut and licked his lips.

“What, was that guy your lover?”

“I broke his leg, not his third leg. Don’t blame me if he can’t satisfy you.”

Wang Lei’s gaze dragged across Liang Yu like a knife, and an ugly smile spread across his face.

“If he can’t do it, I could keep you company.”

“I’m probably stronger than he is. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.”

The other boys burst into laughter.

Their arrogance made Liang Yu tremble with rage.

“In that case…” Liang Yu drew a deep breath, cold light gathering in her eyes. “I have nothing left to hold back.”

She suddenly moved. Emerald light flared around her, splitting into countless threads that connected her to Zhang Ke and the others.

[Resonance Chain (B-rank)]

Wang Lei sneered and clasped his hands together. An elemental spirit appeared and rapidly merged into his body.

His aura surged, and his body grew visibly larger.

“I don’t show mercy to women. Don’t blame me if you get hurt!”

Wang Lei charged at Liang Yu with a vicious grin. His speed showed that he intended to end the fight with a single blow.

With the attributes granted by the elemental spirit, he could contend with a close-combat 1-Star anomaly for some time, let alone someone like Liang Yu with a noncombat Talent.

In close quarters, his advantage was absolute.

But then…

[Death’s Curse: Wither.]

Halfway through his charge, Wang Lei abruptly froze.

The strength drained from his body like water squeezed from a sponge.

His arm, which had been loaded with power, went so limp that the incoming blow looked more like a flirtatious caress.

Before Wang Lei could understand what had happened, a certain spectator still playing dead silently cast two more curses.

[Death’s Curse: Sluggishness.]

[Death’s Curse: Frailty.]

“Something’s wrong!”

Fear filled Wang Lei’s eyes. He tried to shout, but it was already too late.

Bang!

“The Ghost King? I’d say we’re about evenly matched. I solo-kill it all the time, too.”

So said Qin Lan, fresh out of a max-star horror instance.
