Chapter 2
Chapter 2
After evening self-study ended, it started pouring. I was standing there, with no idea how to get home-or even where home was-when someone outside the classroom called my name.
“Shuyi, hurry up. It might rain even harder later.”
I looked over and saw an ordinary-looking girl. The school uniform hung a little bulky on her, and with a pair of glasses perched on her flat nose, she really couldn’t be called pretty.
I hopped over on my leg in its cast and greeted her warmly. That was how I’d been before I died-I got along with everyone, and the whole class used to call me Big Bro.
So the original owner of this body did have friends after all. I was deeply relieved.
I immediately slung an arm around her shoulders.
She looked horrified. “What’s gotten into you today?”
I grinned. “I’m happy my friend came to pick me up after school.”
I glanced at the name tag on her chest. Her name was Zou Wen.
Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a figure passing by my side. His shoulder brushed right past my line of sight, and I saw a very tall, very handsome boy walking ahead with a backpack on.
His dark brown hair looked clean and fluffy under the lights, and the warm yellow glow made the bridge of his nose look even sharper.
As expected of a high school boy. That beautiful youthful vibe-chef’s kiss.
But when that boy was going down the stairs, he very clearly glanced at me. His peach-blossom eyes were clear, framed by thick lashes, but he seemed to be warning me. That look was as cold as ice.
“So it’s because of Xiao Ling…” the girl whose neck I had my arm hooked around muttered to herself. “Someone like him-you really dare to dream.”
“What’s wrong with him?” I asked curiously.
“I advise you to give up. How could he possibly like people like us? Yesterday, the girl ranked second in our grade confessed to him, and she’s super pretty. Song Xiaoxue. You should know her, right?”
I didn’t care about the rest and only asked, “If she’s second in our school, where would she rank in the whole province?”
Seeing how relaxed my reaction was, she froze again. “I don’t know… Why would I care about that? Anyway, she should be able to get into Tsinghua University, but it’s not guaranteed. After all, no one from our school has gotten into Tsinghua University for the past two years.”
Hmmmm. I’d figured this school wasn’t all that great. Guess I was right.
“But Xiao Ling is definitely a sure thing. He’s the school’s precious treasure. If he hadn’t messed up in the competition, he probably would’ve already gotten a guaranteed admission.”
I was still savoring the memory of that Xiao Ling when someone suddenly slammed into me hard.
I fell to the ground and cursed, “What the hell, who was that? Can’t you see I’m still crippled?!”
“Sorry, I’m in a hurry. I’m Zhou Yanfei from Senior Year Class Thirteen. If you need compensation, I’ll pay!”
I looked up and saw that he wasn’t wearing a school uniform. He had on a black hoodie, which made his skin look even paler, and around his neck hung a shiny silver cross.
It looked expensive. Add that to his limited-edition sneakers and his casual, devil-may-care attitude, and I could determine one thing: rich second generation.
After saying that one line, he scooped me up from the ground with the force of someone about to carry me in his arms, shoved me toward my friend, then took off on his long legs and vanished without a trace.
“What a psycho!” I cursed once I steadied myself.
“Shuyi… did you take the wrong medicine today?” My friend still seemed unable to process it. “Normally, you don’t even dare talk to boys…”
So Sun Shuyi was an adorable little social-phobe!
But me? I’d been a social butterfly since childhood.
I had only borrowed a body with the same frequency as mine because I wanted to investigate how exactly I had died back then.
But I absolutely never expected that on the day I borrowed Sun Shuyi’s body, she had swallowed an overdose of sleeping pills in the restroom.
Her soul had already left her body when I possessed it, and I-a ghost who had escaped justice and never crossed Naihe Bridge-was locked inside this body.
