Chapter 1

I had been with my boyfriend, Xu Yihe, for six years. I loved him very much, but I still decided to kill him.

Because he cheated on me.

A week ago, on my birthday, Xu Yihe gave me a designer bag and took me to dinner at my favorite restaurant.

After dinner, we went to see a movie together. I had a wonderful time.

When the movie ended, he said something had come up at work. He drove me home, then left.

Ten minutes later, I received two videos via MMS from an anonymous number.

The first was surveillance footage from the movie theater we had just been in. The night-vision camera had captured everything clearly. Sitting on Xu Yihe’s right was me. On his left was a girl with twin ponytails.

Xu Yihe was holding my hand with his right hand and hers with his left, his arms around both of us.

The second video had been filmed five minutes earlier. The location was the gate of my apartment complex. The girl with the twin ponytails got into Xu Yihe’s car.

After watching the videos, I was shaking with rage.

I had used my family’s connections to get Xu Yihe his job. When his family had been sick and short on money, I was the one who helped.

And yet, on my birthday, he had gone on a date with another girl-and had the nerve to sit her right beside me.

I was so angry and heartbroken I had nowhere to put it. I grabbed my phone, ready to call Xu Yihe and confront him.

“I told you the truth because I wanted you to see that he’s a scumbag. Confronting him might only provoke him. You know what he’s like. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

Just as I picked up my phone, another text came from that anonymous number.

I froze. Beneath my anger, a sliver of fear crept in. How did this person know I was about to call Xu Yihe and demand an explanation?

I had no idea who this anonymous person was, but they had a point.

Xu Yihe was usually very good to me, but he also had a terrible temper. Once, someone accidentally bumped into me, and he went straight up and beat the person up.

At the time, I thought it made me feel safe. Now that I thought about it, if he ever turned those fists on me, it would be terrifying.

“Who are you, exactly?”

The other person seemed to know me very well, which only made me more curious.

“That isn’t important,” they replied.

“Then tell me. What should I do?”

“The best thing you can do is leave him as soon as possible. Get far away from him.”

“What if I can’t walk away cleanly? For the past six years, I’ve devoted myself to him. I poured all my feelings into him.

“Even now, knowing he’s a scumbag, I still can’t let him go. I even feel like if he just begged me, I would forgive him immediately.

“Or if we broke up, just thinking about him being with another woman would hurt so much.

“But deep down, I know perfectly well that someone like him isn’t worth loving!”

It was as if I had finally found someone to pour my heart out to. I typed furiously to that anonymous number, every word coming straight from my heart.

The other person was silent for a long time before finally sending one sentence.

“Then pretend he’s dead.”

The moment I saw those words, my heart lurched.

Yes. As long as he was dead, every problem would solve itself.
