Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Once Song Cheng realized I wasn’t angry, his expression relaxed, and he hummed a little tune as he headed into the kitchen to cook.
I sat on the living room sofa, looking through the photos while mulling the whole thing over.
Was it possible that someone really had dated Ren Weiwei under Song Cheng’s name?
Song Cheng said he would handle it. If Ren Weiwei tried to stir up trouble again, I could just hand it over to him and spare myself the anger.
Right in front of him, I placed an order for ten spiked clubs and told him that if he didn’t handle it properly, I’d add another ten.
At noon, Song Cheng, who had originally been on vacation, was called back to the company by his business partner.
After graduation, he’d started his own business, and with my in-laws’ support, the company had grown to a decent size.
At home, he washed vegetables and cooked meals. But once he stepped outside, he was every inch the respectable President Song.
“I’m heading to the office, okay?”
“Go on, go on.”
He stood at the door, dragging his feet and refusing to leave. I looked up and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Other men’s wives give their husbands a goodbye kiss when they leave for work. Why don’t you? Reflect on that, will you?”
I laughed and sighed, then got up and kissed him on the cheek. “Happy now?”
“Ah, a kiss from a beautiful woman. Now that’s energizing!
“Wait for me, honey. Your husband is off to make money for you.”
Song Cheng left with a spring in his step.
Unlike Song Cheng, I was a freelancer and had always worked as a content creator.
While editing a video, for some reason, I clicked into the local news. Sure enough, Song Cheng and I had made the list.
The headline read: Woman Wears Wedding Dress to Crash Wedding for Love, Only to Be Scolded to Tears by Groom
There was even a comment underneath: “Local here. That’s the groom’s ex-girlfriend. If you know, you know!”
Under that comment, I saw a familiar account, “Susu’s Husband,” reply: “What the hell do you know?”
Apparently, Song Cheng’s job wasn’t that busy after all. He had time every day to scroll through videos and manage the comments about himself.
Since Song Cheng had said he would handle this matter, I focused on my own work.
If Song Cheng could handle it, I’d let him. If he couldn’t, then I’d handle Song Cheng. Why go out of my way to make myself angry for no reason?
That afternoon, the sun outside was bright. Thinking that Song Cheng would be getting off work soon, I sent him a WeChat message telling him to wait for me at the entrance to the residential complex so we could go to the supermarket together and buy some food.
Seeing that it was about time, I tidied up and went downstairs.
It happened to be around the time students got out of school, and many parents in the complex were bringing their children home.
For some reason, I kept feeling like everyone was looking at me strangely.
Could it be that they had all seen the local news?
Aunt Wang, who lived downstairs from me, saw me and greeted me with a slightly awkward expression.
“Susu, is your husband home?”
“He’ll be back soon. He went to work.”
Aunt Wang nodded. “Ah. A man really does need to be kept on a tight leash.”
Utterly confused, I echoed her, “Right, right.”
Aunt Wang looked at me as if she wished she could knock some sense into me. “Child, why don’t you understand?”
“Aunt Wang, what do you mean by that?”
Before Aunt Wang could answer, an open bottle of mineral water was suddenly thrown at my back, splashing water all over my pants.
I jumped in fright and turned around to see a little boy grinning at me.
“Bad woman! Serves you right!”
His mother was only a few steps away. Hearing that, she said nothing. Instead, she glared at me.
“Is this how you raise your child?”
The woman curled her lip. “We’re decent people. We can’t compare to homewrecking vixens like you.”
Anger flared in me, and I was just about to step forward and argue with her when Aunt Wang grabbed me. “Susu, her husband cheated on her and abandoned his wife. She’s pitiful too. Don’t get worked up.”
“What does her husband’s affair have to do with me? Just because she’s miserable, the whole world has to pay for it?”
“Exactly. I bought my wife’s shoes myself. They cost twelve thousand. Your kid splashed water on them. How are you going to compensate us?”
