Chapter 2

By the time the wedding was over, I was exhausted-dead on my feet.

As the bride whose groom had almost been stolen, I received no comfort whatsoever. Instead, my entire family was busy comforting the groom.

Before my mom left, she even told me to have a proper talk with Song Cheng and make sure he didn’t take it to heart.

My mother-in-law patted my shoulder. “Please be patient with Xiao Cheng. If you really can’t coax him around, I’ll give you the spiked club we keep at home. I used to beat him with it when he was little.”

I hurriedly declined.

If I hadn’t personally witnessed my mother-in-law’s heroic form as she chased my father-in-law for three whole blocks while swinging that spiked club, I might actually have accepted. But under the circumstances, I really couldn’t steal her thunder.

After all our friends and relatives had left, Song Cheng was still sulking on the sofa.

Resigned, I poured him a cup of warm water. “Still mad?”

Song Cheng gritted his teeth. “Just wait until I find out who brought that woman here. I’m going to teach them a lesson they won’t forget.”

I asked, “Who is this Weiwei?”

Song Cheng snuck a glance at me, looking a little guilty. “My high school classmate.”

“Just a classmate?”

“Well… we dated for a month.”

“Mm-hmm?”

Song Cheng immediately straightened up, sitting perfectly upright. “Really, Susu, I swear there’s nothing between us!

“And we broke up because she fell for my buddy. I was the wronged party here. I practically had a whole prairie growing on my head!

“We haven’t been in touch for a million years. I have no idea what kind of evil wind blew through her head today!”

I nodded and fell into silent thought.

No matter how I looked at it, what happened today was bizarre. What kind of person suddenly showed up at a wedding to snatch the groom without even discussing it with the groom first?

If we called the police, it would be enough to get her detained.

While I was thinking, Song Cheng sighed again beside me.

“Ugh. I knew getting our marriage license that day was too rushed. It must have jinxed the wedding.”

After saying that, the big, burly Song Cheng looked at me with the wounded expression of a teenage girl. “When we go abroad for our honeymoon, let’s have another wedding there to make up for it.”

I took a deep breath and couldn’t bring myself to refuse my six-foot-two, 176-pound husband with the heart of a princess.

Mainly because the whole marriage license thing was, to some extent, my fault.

We had already gotten our marriage license last year. We just hadn’t held the wedding yet.

As for the license, Song Cheng had always brooded over it.

“Who gets married with the bride proposing?

“I’d already prepared the diamond ring. I stayed up for nights thinking about it, planning how I’d surprise you.

“And then there you were, gnawing on a pig’s trotter with oil all over your mouth, when you suddenly said, ‘I made an appointment at the Civil Affairs Bureau. Let’s drive over and get our marriage license in a bit.'”

That day, holding the marriage certificate in his hands, he looked utterly aggrieved. “You didn’t even wash your hair!”

I figured that if two people were getting married, both sides ought to be satisfied, so I suggested,

“The divorce hall is just down the corridor to the left. How about we apply for a divorce, and then you can propose again properly from the beginning?”

After I said that, Song Cheng got mad, refused to communicate, and went to the parking lot to get the car without waiting for me.

I stood by the roadside, wanting to cry but unable to shed a tear. After spending so much time with Song Cheng, even my mouth had forgotten how to speak properly.

A little while later, he drove back. He was holding a rose, and after rolling down the window, he handed it to me.

“Take it. What kind of person gets engaged without flowers?”

Holding the flower, my heart went soft. I couldn’t help laughing as I asked, “It’s so cold out. Where did you buy flowers?”

Song Cheng raised his brows smugly. “If I didn’t even have that much ability, how would I support my wife?”

Later, after I pressed him for the truth, I found out that he had seen a young couple who had come to get their marriage license carrying flowers, chased after them, and asked them for one.

Song Cheng was truly a walking social menace.
