Chapter 3

But once she agreed, everything changed.

Chen Mengmeng’s dreams gradually turned dark and terrifying.

She frequently dreamed of funeral halls lined with ancestral tablets.

She saw coffins buried in earthen pits and pale, ghostly tombstones.

Whenever she tried to run, that man would follow her like a lingering spirit.

“Didn’t you promise to be with me?

“Why haven’t you come to find me?

“You can’t escape. I’m waiting for you…”

Chen Mengmeng became more and more afraid to sleep. Whenever she finally managed to drift off, she would fall into a nightmare.

Every time, she would wake up screaming, her nerves frayed to the point of collapse.

When Chen Mengmeng’s mother, Li Xia, found out, she took her to various major hospitals.

They saw many psychiatrists and were prescribed a mountain of medication, but none of it worked.

Finally, they were forced to look for unconventional solutions, meeting with many masters and people with extraordinary abilities.

Many of these masters said that Chen Mengmeng had attracted a Yin Peach Blossom.

The entity was after the girl’s life.

After that, they performed rituals and burned paper effigies, but Chen Mengmeng’s nightmares only grew worse.

She began to sleepwalk, eventually losing the ability to distinguish between reality and dreams.

Several times, she nearly jumped off the balcony.

Not long ago, during another sleepwalking episode, Chen Mengmeng scribbled an address on a piece of paper: At the end of Liumian Road, Golden Crane Bridge, Yangfeng County.

When Li Xia looked up the location on her phone, she was instantly terrified.

The map showed the Qingsong Mountain Cemetery in Yangfeng County.

With an address in hand, an old monk gave Li Xia a suggestion.

He told her she must find someone with strong Yang energy and a resilient fate to accompany Chen Mengmeng to that place.

They had to find the source at high noon, dig the thing up, and burn it to ashes.

By destroying its cultivation, they could completely “sever” this Yin Peach Blossom.

However, doing so carried risks.

If the person they found couldn’t suppress the entity, then both he and Chen Mengmeng might never return.

This kind of life-threatening task sounded simple enough, but finding someone willing to do it was difficult.

Li Xia asked around everywhere and eventually found me through a real estate agent.

At first, I was skeptical. The whole thing sounded too far-fetched.

I wasn’t afraid of any Yin Peach Blossom; I was worried that Li Xia and Chen Mengmeng were scammers.

But when I met Li Xia and Chen Mengmeng in person, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse.

Li Xia’s look of utter desperation was identical to mine when I was scrambling to raise medical fees for my wife.

When she saw me, it was as if she had finally caught a last-resort lifeline.

Before she could even speak, she fell to her knees on the ground.

I hurried to pull her up, but she clung to my arm.

“Mr. Long, we’re truly out of options. I beg of you, my daughter can’t hold on much longer.”

I glanced at Chen Mengmeng. The young girl hadn’t had a full night’s sleep in a long time. She tried to help her mother up, but she had no strength left.

A parent’s love knows no bounds.

I have a daughter of my own.

“I’ll take the job.”

I tossed my cigarette butt aside. “Whether we succeed or not, I’ll go with you both.”
