Chapter 11

The two of us stayed awake until dawn.

The power came back on in the latter half of the night, and no more strange things happened after that.

Wang Ming had a welt on his arm from where I had lashed him with the whip. However, he was in exceptionally good spirits-he even seemed a bit hyperactive.

Wang Ming told me that when he was a child, he used to get mysterious fevers for no reason. Even as an adult, he would sometimes feel dazed and unable to concentrate. The elders in his family said he had a weak horoscope and warned him to avoid places with bad energy.

After hearing that, I immediately sent Wang Ming away.

I stayed in that urban village for another month on my own, but I didn’t encounter anything strange again.

What I didn’t expect was that during that month, a major disaster struck Tang Dong Company.

Xie Peng was dead. He died while out on a Chong Sha run.

Xie Peng’s family descended upon Tang Dong Company to cause a scene. Xie Peng hadn’t been a good person, and his family members were just as much of a bunch of rogues. They refused to bury him even two weeks after his death, leaving his body right at the entrance of Tang Dong Company while demanding three million yuan in compensation.

Even calling the police was useless. As soon as they were driven away, they would just carry the body back again.

It was a case of one villain meeting another. Tang Dong was so harassed by the family that he didn’t even dare go to his own office. Meanwhile, he was watching his signed contracts go to waste; with the trucks unable to hit the road, he was on the verge of breach of contract.

Driven to desperation, Tang Dong hardened his heart and decided to drive the Chong Sha route himself.

I only found out when Xue Wenping, who worked with Tang Dong, tracked me down.

Tang Dong hadn’t gone on the Chong Sha run alone. Xue Wenping’s son, Xue Liang, had gone to see Tang Dong to press him about a delivery. Tang Dong had actually taken Xue Liang along with him.

Xue Wenping was a vegetable wholesaler who owned three massive vegetable bases. Back when I ran my logistics company, I had collaborated with him. Although we weren’t close, he was a pleasant man who paid promptly, though his transportation requirements were very strict. After all, since it was produce, everything had to be kept fresh.

“I know about the grudge between you and Tang Dong. I don’t expect you to save him, but my son is innocent,”

Xue Wenping spoke with great sincerity. “How about this: as long as you make the trip, regardless of whether you succeed or not, you don’t have to return the 300,000 yuan deposit. If my son returns safely, I’ll double it.”

After saying this, Xue Wenping prepared to transfer the money to me, but I quickly stopped him.

“Mr. Xue, it’s not that I don’t want to take the job, but in past Chong Sha runs, I only drove the route. I’ve never rescued anyone.”

I was somewhat confused. “If something really happened, you should call the police first. We call it Chong Sha, but in reality, it’s mostly for peace of mind and to scout the road conditions. There really isn’t that much supernatural stuff involved.”

Even though I had encountered plenty of strange things lately, I had been in the trucking business for many years. I felt that the trouble at Tang Dong Company was mainly because he was too focused on quick profits. Driving a truck on a new route is something that requires extreme caution. Long-haul trucking often involves driving through the night for extended periods, which drains a driver’s energy. Even the slightest oversight can lead to an accident.

Back when I drove heavy-duty trucks, I was often the one to lead the way down new, untested routes. In the industry, we call this “Chong Sha.”
