Chapter 3

“Put some of those chocolates you gave me today in my schoolbag tomorrow too.”

“Those were liquor-filled chocolates. They’re bad for your health.”

“So you knew I can’t have alcohol. Then why did you deliberately give them to me?”

I sat by the window on the right side of the back seat. From behind and to the side, I saw the driver’s jaw muscle twitch.

He was probably so angry his teeth itched.

“It’s not like I asked you to be my driver. That was Dad’s decision. As far as I’m concerned, it makes no difference who Dad sends to take care of me. Even if he didn’t send anyone and just transferred money to me, I’d be fine with that too. So please don’t take out your resentment over being kicked out of the old mansion by Dad on me. I’m a sick child. I’m very fragile.”

A few seconds passed after I finished speaking before the driver finally forced out, “I’m sorry, Miss.”

In the schedule in my head, I checked off one item-put the driver in his place today, then find a chance to put the nanny in her place tomorrow. Quality of life had to be improved little by little. No need to rush.

“Miss, we’re setting off.”

The car turned a corner, and I saw a few very “coolly dressed” boys and girls at the corner of the wall snatch a girl’s crutch away, shove her to the ground, and seemingly prepare to kick her.

“Stop the car.”

I rolled down the window and shouted at them, “Hey, I recorded that. Your faces are all clear.”

As I spoke, I waved my hand at them so they could see the phone I was holding.

One of the girls with yellow hair charged toward me. She had a lip piercing, and when she talked, the piercing bobbed up and down. Just looking at it felt uncomfortable. “What class are you in? Tired of living, are you? You dare stick your nose into our business?!”

I continued shouting weakly-mainly because my body didn’t allow me to confront people with any real force.

“Don’t scare me, okay? If you scare me, I’ll call the police.”

Two boys hurried over and dragged the girl away. “Let’s go, let’s go!”

After the group scattered, I got out of the car, picked up the crutch they had thrown aside, and handed it to the girl who was using the wall to pull herself up.

Only after she stood did I realize she was very tall, at least around five foot nine. Being tall was one thing, but even with her hair tied in a ponytail-the hairstyle that exposed one’s face shape the most-that face met every aesthetic standard I could think of. Facial proportions, head-to-face ratio, symmetry, whatever else there was; basically, it was a perfect face growing on a perfect head.

Her eyes were very light, a color like golden shimmer kneaded into honey, and also like osmanthus petals drifting in sunlight. Not too deep, not too pale, but just the right shade of amber. I had only ever seen descriptions like that in novels before. This was my first time seeing it in real life.

How could someone have no makeup on, be leaning on a crutch, have just been bullied, and still be this beautiful?!

“Thank you. But next time, don’t provoke them so easily. These people will latch onto you.”

“They wouldn’t dare.”

“They’re all seniors. They’ll be out in society soon enough. What do you think-will they dare or not?”

After saying that, she comforted me, “But they came after me. Just be careful coming in and out of school these next few days.”

The driver tapped the horn lightly from not far away, signaling that I should go.

I hurriedly asked, “What class are you in? What’s your name? I’m going to tell the teacher what happened today.”

“Don’t…”

“Isn’t that just indulging them and letting them bully you? They’ll only get worse.”

“A teacher can’t solve this.”

“Then I’ll go to the police. If the police can’t solve it either, I’ll find a lawyer and sue them. There has to be a solution!”

“You just transferred to Baimu, didn’t you?”

“Yeah.”

“I can tell.”

“Is Baimu’s atmosphere really that bad?”

“This doesn’t have much to do with the school. I acted rashly and offended someone I shouldn’t have. I don’t want you to end up like me.”

“Who did you offend? I don’t believe anyone can cover the sky with one hand in a society ruled by law.”

“Beep, beep-”

The driver honked again. This time, it lasted longer than before and was louder too. I could hear his impatience.

I called the driver. “You go back first. I’ll take a taxi home later.”

“Miss, I have to ensure your safety.”

“Then wait quietly. When Dad is discussing business with someone, would you dare keep going ‘beep, beep, beep’ nonstop?”

The driver hung up. He was probably cursing me in his heart to hurry up and die again.

After the call, I asked, “Are you going back to school? I’ll walk you there.”

“No need. I’m a day student. My home is just up ahead. I can walk back by myself.”

“Your leg?”

“It was a fracture. It’s already healed. The doctor just told me to use a crutch for a few days to be safe.”

“Was it those people too?”

“Classmate…”

I looked at her firmly, letting her know I was determined to drag those bullies out and bring them to justice.

“I offended Feng Wendong.”

Ha. I knew it. What good could a school tyrant possibly be?

“My mom runs a shredded potato pancake stall outside the school. A few months ago, when Feng Wendong was fighting with someone, he smashed up my mom’s stall. The Feng Family wanted to settle it with money, but I insisted on reporting it to the teachers. Back then, I thought the same way you did: the school had to handle it. If the school couldn’t, I’d go to the police. If the police couldn’t either, then I’d… Anyway, you’ve seen how it turned out. When I was going downstairs, someone pushed me-I don’t even know who. Not only did I break my leg, but now they’re still harassing me.”
