Chapter 1

Her boyfriend was Feng Wendong, the school tyrant. Feng Wendong even dared to hit the dean of discipline, which, if you rounded up, meant Yuan Lina even dared to hit teachers.

All of the above was what my deskmate, Pan Li, had spent the two days since I transferred here preaching to me.

Pan Li looked like such a quiet, studious little girl, with her purple-framed glasses and her obedient, head-down-and-study vibe. Who would have thought she was such a gossip? All I did was ask who the empty seat belonged to, and she spent two whole days ranting to me about everything Yuan Lina had ever done.

Another break between classes arrived. I lowered my head and prayed in my heart: Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me…

Then, the instant my peripheral vision swept over Pan Li, her eyes lit up again.

“Did you know Yuan Lina once blocked the class beauty from Class One? I’m telling you, she was just jealous because that girl was prettier than her. People say that as long as there’s a girl in our school who’s prettier than her, she’ll teach them a lesson.”

I tried to change the subject. “I’m going to the school store to buy something to eat. Want a sweet-and-spicy grilled sausage? My treat. It even has crunchy cartilage.”

“Class starts in just a few minutes. There’s no time to eat grilled sausage!” Pan Li was not distracted at all and continued talking about Yuan Lina. “The whole school agrees the prettiest person is Zhao Linfeng, but she doesn’t dare touch Zhao Linfeng. Do you know why?”

Logically, I should have followed her lead and asked why.

But I didn’t dare.

Because at that very moment, a girl had walked up behind Pan Li. With a black-manicured finger, she tapped her own lips, signaling for me to keep quiet.

She wore a skintight black T-shirt printed with Hello Kitty, a purple patent-leather miniskirt, black striped stockings, and studded biker boots-weird clothes!

Her hair was dyed silver, the rough ends faded to yellow, while her roots had grown out black-weird hair!

She had on the currently popular Japanese-style makeup: enormous eyes, exaggerated lashes, monkey-butt blush, and a nearly colorless nude lip gloss-over-the-top makeup!

It was her! The legendary Yuan Lina!

Pan Li, with absolutely no sense of self-preservation, slapped my arm. “Oh, come on, you’re really not curious at all?!”

I shook my head hard, widening my eyes to hint that she should stop talking.

Pan Li gave an arrogant little “hmph.” “Then I won’t tell you that Yuan Lina’s boyfriend has a crush on Zhao Linfeng!”

Pan Li’s mouth was looser than my grandma’s waistband!

Behind Pan Li, Yuan Lina let out a cold laugh.

Before I transmigrated, I’d always thought this kind of non-mainstream style was tacky and hilarious. But Yuan Lina had a small face, striking features, and a build like a bamboo pole. The cheap T-shirt pilling at the fabric and the snagged stockings didn’t affect her ability to embody the aesthetic at all.

In the words of this era, she really was cool-especially when she sneered.

I thought to myself that, setting all the rumors aside, she really was very pretty.

Hearing the cold laugh behind her, Pan Li turned her head, her body going slightly stiff.

Smack-

Yuan Lina slapped the brand-new textbook in her hand onto Pan Li’s desk.

She didn’t use much force. It was more threat and humiliation than anything else.

Pointing at the tip of Pan Li’s nose, she said softly, “Wait for me in the equipment room on the third floor at lunch.”

Pan Li was already trembling with fear. She hurriedly apologized, “I’m sorry… I’m sorry…”

“And you…” Yuan Lina pointed at me next, but since I’d only just transferred in, she didn’t know my name yet.

“Hello, my name is Xu Woruo. Woruo, as in ‘before the mulberry leaves have fallen, their leaves are lush and green.'”

“Why the hell are you grinning at me? You got a death wish?!”

Yuan Lina suddenly roared, but I wasn’t frightened. I only instinctively pressed a hand over my chest and said to her, “Please speak more quietly when you talk to me. Sorry, I can’t handle loud noises.”

Yuan Lina laughed in anger. “What?”

I could tell from the shape of her mouth that a curse was about to come out, so I immediately explained, “I smiled at you because I thought your outfit looked really good. There aren’t many people with long legs, a tiny waist, big boobs, a nice butt, a small face, a high nose, and pretty lips all at once. Has anyone ever told you that you were born with naturally smiling lips?”

Yuan Lina was thrown off by that barrage of compliments. “Sm… smiling lips?”

“It means you look like you’re smiling even when you aren’t.”

She gave a dismissive “tch.”

“Wow, you look even prettier when you smile!” I nudged Pan Li’s shoulder to help her calm down. “Just like you said, Yuan Lina really is beautiful!”

Yuan Lina’s expression was no longer as cold and hard as before, but she still said, “Xu Woruo, don’t think I’ll let you off just because of that.”

I blinked innocently. “I can’t even call you pretty…? Beauties really do have big tempers.”

Riiing-

The class bell rang, and Yuan Lina returned to her seat.

Only after she left did I realize Pan Li was already crying.

While the teacher still hadn’t arrived, I whispered to her, “It’s fine. She’s not angry anymore.”

“She won’t let me go… She’s going to hit me… Wuuuu…”

I took a tissue from my bag and handed it to her. “I promise you, everything will be fine. Just don’t go around spreading other people’s business anymore.”

Pan Li kept crying. She didn’t believe for a second that I could make Yuan Lina let her off.
