Chapter 2

Wei Siyu had blocked me on every platform ages ago.

He hadn’t even spared NetEase Cloud Music.

On the day we broke up, he even beat up the chickens on my farm.

You have to understand, he used to call himself their loving father.

When I didn’t have time to feed them, he would sneak his phone to school just to clean up after them and give them food for me.

The second-ranked student in our grade, a model of both character and academics-when had he ever done anything so outrageous?

Don’t be fooled by the fact that Wei Siyu has inherited the family business now and become a domineering CEO.

Back in high school, he followed every school rule to the letter. He was so honest he was almost naive.

The only time he ever used his family’s influence was to have me transferred over as his deskmate.

In a top class where boys and girls were never seated together, the two of us stood out a little too much.

But no one objected, because I was ranked first in the grade.

No one would have thought of puppy love. Not even me.

I knew Wei Siyu had come to steal my methods.

He was curious how a girl from a small county town had stolen his precious first place.

And he was determined to steal it back.

As for me, I couldn’t stand him.

There were two reasons.

One: his family was rich, and I hated rich people.

Two: when he talked, he liked to look down at people with his chin raised. He was arrogant and ridiculously pretentious.

My first impression of him was terrible, so my attitude toward Wei Siyu was as cold as it could possibly be.

Wei Siyu was proud to the bone. He wouldn’t press his warm face to someone’s cold shoulder, let alone a block of ice.

The only conversations we had were when test scores came out.

And every time, Wei Siyu was the one who couldn’t hold back and spoke first.

“What did you get?”

I would report my score in as few words as possible, without expecting him to answer.

If he gave a proud little snort, it meant he had scored higher than me.

If he let out a cold, mocking “heh,” it meant we had tied.

If he went silent, it meant his lips were pressed tight, the light in his brilliant eyes had dimmed, and even his sharp, lively brows had drawn together.

Wait. Why was I looking at him again?

Without letting it show, I withdrew my gaze and tightened my grip on my pen.

That cunning second-ranked student was trying to shake my resolve with his looks, but I would never fall for it.

And so, our lukewarm deskmate relationship continued.

Until the competition arrived.

On the way back to the classroom after turning in our registration forms, Wei Siyu spoke with a touch of smugness.

“Song Yuanxing, you really are pretty smart. But competitions don’t just require talent. Experience matters too.

“I’m definitely going to beat you this time!”

The teaching resources in my small county town hadn’t been that strong, and it was true that I hadn’t had much exposure to competitions in middle school.

Wei Siyu was proud, but he wasn’t blindly arrogant. This time, he had hit the nail on the head.

But when it came to grades, I was just as proud as he was, and I wasn’t someone who admitted defeat easily either.

I smiled calmly. “Since you’re so confident, how about we make a bet?

“The loser has to agree to one request from the winner. Nothing too excessive, of course.”

A few traces of hesitation appeared on Wei Siyu’s proud face.

He knew his opponent couldn’t be underestimated, and his instincts told him there was a trap.

I dragged out my tone leisurely. “I never expected you to be so afraid of… losing, Wei Siyu.”

If someone with worse grades than him had tried to provoke him like that, Wei Siyu would only have found their methods crude.

But since it was me, Wei Siyu exploded instantly.

“Fine. Let’s bet.”

He gritted his teeth. “Song Yuanxing, you’re done for.”

What a coincidence. It seemed he couldn’t stand me either.

Later, when the competition results came out, both Wei Siyu and I won gold awards.

We had anticipated this possibility, so the two of us had already compared our answers.

Unfortunately for him, my score happened to be just a tiny bit higher than Wei Siyu’s.

He was right. Experience did matter.

If I had as much experience as he did, I definitely would have scored even higher above him.

Even though he had won a gold award, Wei Siyu’s expression was thunderous.

He couldn’t endure it for even one more day. He just wanted to hurry up, accept the consequences of losing the bet, and then forget this humiliation.

“What do you want me to agree to? Hurry up and say it.”

I pretended not to understand. “Agree to what?

“Oh-I remember now. It’s because we made a bet.

“Then why is it you agreeing to my request?”

It was almost lunch break, and there weren’t many people on the tree-lined path.

Wei Siyu was silent for a while. Then, all of a sudden, he gave up completely.

At the top of his lungs, he shouted, “Because I lost! I lost! Happy now?”

I almost burst out laughing.

But seeing Wei Siyu look so devastated, I very conscientiously held it in.

Clearing my throat, I said, “Little Wei, don’t get so worked up.”

“Who are you calling Little Wei? My birthday is three months before yours!”

Wei Siyu completely bristled.

“Fine, fine, fine. Then should I call you David?”

Crap. My mouth was too fast.

Wei Siyu blushed all the way down to the base of his neck.

I explained, “I didn’t mean anything else…”

The more I explained, the worse it sounded.

Wei Siyu’s proud head lowered. His voice became a little quieter.

“What exactly do you want me to do?”

After making such a mess of things, I didn’t even feel that comfortable laughing at him anymore.

“It’s not really anything. I just want to see you mime a basketball shot?”

Some of the boys in class loved doing that move.

Whenever they did, Wei Siyu looked at them like he was watching a pack of idiots.

On that point, Wei Siyu and I agreed.

So when I made that request, I was purely trying to mess with him.

After all, I had always found him extremely annoying.

Sure enough, Wei Siyu turned completely red with fury.

Afraid I would make him too mad, I ultimately decided to let him off.

“If you really don’t want to do it, then forget it.”

He glared at me. “I keep my word. A bet is a bet.”

Wei Siyu loosened up his joints, jumped, and made a shooting gesture.

The movement was crisp and clean, not pretentious at all.

He straightened his collar, pretending nothing had happened.

Then he said fiercely, “You’re not allowed to tell anyone.”

Ha. He really was like a little peacock.

In that moment, the seed of a secret crush quietly took root.
