Chapter 3
Chapter 3
The couple’s apology was late, but it arrived all the same.
After two days of recuperating in the hospital, Ye Sheng’s mother took me home.
Ye Sheng’s father had passed away when the sisters were very young.
Her mother was an incredible woman.
She had started a business while raising two children on her own.
Now, her career had achieved modest success, and both her children were grown.
The only thing she had ever worried about was her elder daughter’s health.
But now, her elder daughter had done something utterly inhuman. Not only had she tried to harm her own younger sister, she had even gotten herself sent to the hospital in the process.
Ye Sheng’s mother seriously began to suspect that she had failed somewhere in raising them.
In just a few days, she seemed to have aged ten years.
When Song Cheng and Ye Yun came before me, Mom turned her head away outright, ignoring Ye Yun’s pleading look for help.
I sat on the sofa and lifted my chin at them.
“Go on.”
Ye Yun’s expression turned ugly.
“Ye Sheng, are you done making a scene yet? Because of you, your brother-in-law and I were only released on bail yesterday. Do you have any idea how badly this affects us?”
Mom couldn’t listen anymore.
“You did something wrong yourself, and now you’re blaming your sister? Ye Yun, is this how I raised you?”
Ye Yun stared at her in disbelief.
“You’re blaming me? How could you? I haven’t been able to eat or sleep these past few days, and you never came to see me even once. It’s one thing if you won’t help me persuade Ye Sheng, but you’re blaming me too? Are you even my mother?”
Mom was furious.
“If I weren’t your mother, then for hurting my daughter like this, I would make sure you rotted in prison for the rest of your life!”
Ye Yun was so worked up that her chest rose and fell rapidly.
Song Cheng wrapped an arm around her, his face full of worry.
“Ah Yun, Ah Yun, are you all right? Don’t scare me!”
Then he turned to Mom and me with a harsh expression.
“You’re the people closest to Ah Yun. Don’t you know she can’t get emotionally agitated?”
I clicked my tongue impatiently.
“So you do know Ye Yun can’t get emotional? From the moment you walked in, you’ve been hiding behind her. Were you counting on her to deal with me so you could win without lifting a finger? If you’ve got any guts, kneel down and apologize to me yourself. What kind of man hides behind a woman?”
Ye Yun immediately shielded her man again.
“Ye Sheng, he’s your brother-in-law!”
Who did she think she was yelling at?
I shot to my feet and stared coldly at Ye Yun.
“When you let your man rape your own sister, why didn’t you remember he was my brother-in-law then?”
Song Cheng looked at me in shock, as if he hadn’t expected me to be so blunt.
Ye Yun’s eyes darted away.
“What nonsense are you spouting? What rape? Ye Sheng, how can you say something like that? Mom, aren’t you going to do something about her?”
I had completely run out of patience.
“Enough. Stop squawking. Either kneel and apologize to me, or go back and serve your prison sentence. Don’t waste my time.”
Song Cheng and Ye Yun exchanged a glance.
They seemed to finally realize I was serious.
Song Cheng took Ye Yun’s hand and moved to shield her behind him.
“Your sister was in the wrong this time. Because of her health, she acted a little extremely. I’ll apologize to you on her behalf.”
I looked at him mockingly.
“Downplaying the serious parts, acting like you had no choice? Your tone makes it sound like I’m the immature one and you magnanimous adults are letting it slide. Who are you trying to disgust?”
Ye Yun’s face flushed red with anger.
“Ye Sheng, don’t push your luck! Even if what I did was wrong, in the end, nothing actually happened, did it? What exactly do you want?”
Smack!
Mom finally couldn’t hold back anymore. With reddened eyes, she slapped Ye Yun across the face.
That actually surprised me.
Ye Yun was stunned by the slap. She stared blankly at Mom.
Song Cheng pulled Ye Yun into his arms, looking enraged.
“Mother-in-law, Ah Yun is my wife. No one in this world is allowed to bully her. Not even you!”
Mom was the type to meet force with force.
“I need your permission to hit my own daughter? What are you going to do? Suppress me? Song Cheng, go home and ask your father whether you even have that ability!”
Song Cheng froze.
Ye Yun finally came back to herself.
She shrieked, “You’re biased!”
Mom trembled with anger.
“I’m biased? Ye Yun, that’s your sister. Your own sister! You pushed your own sister into a fire pit. You drugged your own sister. Were you trying to force her to die?”
Ye Yun’s eyes were red from crying.
“But did she die? She didn’t! But I’m about to die! I’m dying! If I die, what about Ah Yan? He’s so little. What will happen to him? She’s my sister. Can’t she take pity on me and help me take care of Ah Yan?”
“No,” I said calmly.
Ye Yun glared at me with hatred.
I said, “Why should I take pity on you? You were the one who insisted on having that child. The doctor told you not to. Mom and I told you not to. Mom even cried and begged you. Did you ever take pity on her?”
After learning Ye Yun was pregnant, Mom had once cried and begged her, “You want to bear his child, but what about my child?”
But Ye Yun would seemingly never admit she was wrong.
She screamed herself hoarse. “Am I not allowed to have a child for the man I love?”
“Of course you are,” I said. “So you get to bear the consequences of your own actions. No one else is paying the price for you.”
In the end, this apology ended with Ye Yun fainting.
As Song Cheng anxiously carried Ye Yun away, Mom reflexively followed them for two steps, then stopped.
I had never intended to make her choose between her two daughters.
“If you’re worried, go check on her.”
Mom shook her head and said nothing.
