Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Chu Huai and I sat in his stretch limousine. The butler drove while the two of us sat in the back.
He lounged lazily against the seat.
Jing City’s nightscape was bustling and bright. Brilliant neon streamed past the window in flowing lines, and the shifting lights fell through the glass onto Chu Huai’s face, sharpening his sculpted features and the proud bridge of his nose.
Haha. He really was God’s favorite.
Chu Huai suddenly spoke, his voice cold and weary.
“You’re pretty quick on the uptake. I confessed, and you actually said yes.”
I said, “Haha. Yes, yes. Absolutely, absolutely.”
He gave me a surprised look before continuing.
“You and Muxue are roommates, right? Then stay in that dorm until you graduate. Don’t move out. Stay by Muxue’s side. If Muxue runs into any trouble later, tell me immediately. Understood? I said before that I’d buy Muxue an apartment so she could live off-campus, but she told me not to humiliate her with my filthy money.”
I nodded.
“Sure, sure. No problem. Haha.”
But he was displeased.
“Hey! Why do you keep sneaking looks at your phone while you’re talking to me? Can’t you tell I’m already in a bad mood? What’s so urgent?”
As expected of the Young Master. Even his temper was this awful.
I immediately put my phone down.
“Sorry, sorry. I was checking Travel Frog, haha. I’m really sorry. My bad. Why don’t you tell me how I should compensate you?”
That only made him angrier.
“What do you mean? What’s so interesting about Travel Frog? Do you know I can make you drop out with one flick of my finger?”
The temperature in the car was on the low side, but the back of the butler’s shirt was soaked with sweat.
The Young Master’s temper really was terrifying.
It seemed he was the kind of person who meant what he said.
I explained, “It’s like this. My phone doesn’t have enough storage, so I need to uninstall Travel Frog. But I have to wait until the frog leaves before I uninstall it. That’s why I need to watch and see when the frog leaves.”
He got even angrier.
“Who are you trying to fool? You can uninstall it whether the frog is there or not! Why do you have to wait until the frog is gone?”
I said, “Because I can’t uninstall it right in front of the frog… It feels like I’d be letting it down. So I wanted to wait until it went off traveling before uninstalling the game. Haha. I’m sorry, Young Master.”
That was how we people-pleasers were.
We even had to please a frog.
He froze for a moment, staring at me in shock.
I grew a little uneasy. If I got expelled, my parents would probably marry me off to some old man in exchange for a bride price. Not that I’m saying old men are necessarily bad, or that my parents are bad.
I said, “Young Master, I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad-”
Before I could finish, he snapped out of his shock, bent forward, and burst into laughter.
“Hey, how can there be someone as dumb and spacey as you in this world? You even care about a frog’s feelings?”
I was a little shocked. The Young Master really was moody.
Was this what people meant when they said serving a ruler was like serving a tiger?
The next second, he pulled out a stiff box and threw it to me.
“Don’t uninstall it. Keep your frog.”
I looked down.
It was a brand-new Apple phone box.
An Apple 16 Pro Max, the current top model, with 1TB of storage.
I really didn’t need to uninstall anything anymore.
But I hesitated a little. After all, I’d only ever used cheap secondhand phones, and this Apple phone seemed to cost over ten thousand yuan. It was too expensive.
I said, “I-”
The butler driving the car cut me off with a warm smile.
“Miss Chen, the Young Master smashes phones when he’s angry, so there are many new phones like this in the car as backups. There are plenty more. Please accept it without worry.”
I said, “Haha. Okay, okay. Thank you so much. I’m so touched, this humble soul has been struck down and reborn as a delicate maiden.”
The butler was stunned.
Chu Huai froze too.
Oh, right. People in high society probably didn’t scroll short videos or know trashy internet memes.
Chu Huai covered his ears and ordered me, “Are you insane? Stop assaulting my ears with stupid nonsense like that! Got it? It’s not funny at all!”
I looked at him.
He glared at me with a tight expression, but there was laughter hidden in his beautiful eyes, and he failed to conceal it.
I smiled too.
“Okay, okay, Young Master.”
The butler smiled.
“The Young Master was not in a very good mood today, but he’s much better now.”
Chu Huai gave a cold snort, leaned back lazily again, took the watch off his wrist, and tossed it to me. His chin was lifted, his expression proud and spoiled.
“It’s yours. Tomorrow at noon, I want you to have lunch with me. Keep making me happy. Understood?”
I accepted it.
“Okay, okay. No problem, no problem. Thank you, Young Master.”
The butler drove us to dinner, then sent me back to the dorm building.
When I got back to the dorm, I searched up the price and discovered the watch was a Patek Philippe, retailing for 740,000 yuan.
Because it was a limited edition, its secondhand price had been driven very high.
A near-mint secondhand one like mine could sell for at least over a million yuan.
Shock shot through my brain like a bullet, and I stood frozen in place.
I gripped the tiny watch, my mind going completely blank.
Then I immediately loosened my hold a little, afraid I might damage the watch by gripping it too tightly.
But in the next second, for some reason, my hand began to tremble…
I quickly and gently placed the watch into the pocket closest to my body.
Graduates from my major earned an average salary of 130,000 yuan a year.
For this tiny watch, I would have to work six years without eating or drinking to afford it.
Who said youth had no price? This watch could buy six years of my youth.
Thinking about it that way, the world was so cruel.
Dear heavens, I could finally be the top, because I was done being the bottom. Haha.
