Chapter 4
Chapter 4
In the interrogation room.
The police asked me where the money from selling the stolen ring had gone.
I shrugged. “I spent it all on spirit money.”
“Who did you burn spirit money for?”
“Myself.”
The officer gave a light cough. “You need to take responsibility for what you say.”
“The victim’s property loss far exceeds two thousand yuan. If you can’t obtain the victim’s forgiveness, you will bear the corresponding criminal liability.”
“For example, prison time. Up to several years.”
I said sincerely, “I don’t care.”
After all, in another dozen or so hours in this mortal world, I would be going back.
Being locked up here was fine, too.
That way, I wouldn’t have to face Zhou Yanzhi.
The officers exchanged looks.
In that gray-white space, the silence was deathly pale.
Heavy, suffocating.
An older officer narrowed his eyes and looked at me for a long time.
Suddenly, he said, “Have I met you before?”
I froze.
Memories came roaring back.
Ten years ago, Zhou Yanzhi was admitted to one of the top medical universities in the country.
His father, who had died young, had also graduated from that university.
It was an eight-year clinical medicine program, and the tuition had to be paid in full upfront.
As long as he made it through, he would be able to stand at the operating table, just like his father.
Zhou Yanzhi’s uncle and aunt refused to pay.
They had seized his parents’ inheritance, yet they weren’t even willing to cover his basic tuition and living expenses.
Luckily, I had entered society early. I started my own little street stall business and made some money.
I paid Zhou Yanzhi’s tuition and living expenses.
I didn’t want anything in return. I simply liked him.
I contacted a few lawyer friends and sued Zhou Yanzhi’s uncle and aunt, forcing that heartless family to get out of the house Zhou Yanzhi’s parents had left behind.
Zhou Yanzhi’s uncle and aunt were either smokers or gamblers, and their son was an even bigger bastard.
A minor, barely more than a brat, actually dared to take revenge on me.
Not only did he bring people to smash up my candied hawthorn stall, he even tried to drag me into the woods to do things no kid his age should ever be doing.
If the auntie who sold fried cold noodles nearby hadn’t come back to get something, sensed something was wrong, and called the police, they really would have gotten away with it.
The officer who handled that case back then was the one in front of me now.
He had said, with so much pity, that if I were his daughter, he would never let me be bullied like that.
During those few days at the station, this officer showed me a great deal of care.
All these years, I had wanted to find a chance to thank him.
Who would have thought that when we met again, we would be separated by life and death?
My thoughts slowly drifted back.
I smiled and shook my head. “You must have mistaken me for someone else.”
An officer suddenly opened the door, his expression complicated.
“The victim has issued a letter of forgiveness. Dr. Zhou said you two know each other. You were… just joking around, that’s all.”
