Cheng Yi had bought the diamond ring she loved and was so happy that she insisted on treating me to a meal.

She bragged to me that her boyfriend was handsome, rich, and a renowned cardiologist at a top-tier hospital.

Aside from the fact that he had been married before, he was practically perfect.

Sipping my orange juice, I asked, “How did you two get together?”

Cheng Yi smiled and said, “He pursued me. Said it was love at first sight.”

I smiled back. “You two really are a match made in heaven.”

Cheng Yi suddenly sighed. “Please. He and his late wife were the ones who had true love. If she hadn’t died, where would I even fit in?”

I lowered my head and said nothing.

Cheng Yi said wistfully, “His late wife really had a hard life. She supported him through his master’s and doctorate. Then, just a few years after he became a doctor, she got caught up in a doctor-patient dispute and was stabbed to death by one of her husband’s patients.”

I said flatly, “It’s nothing.”

Everyone had their own fate, that was all.

Zhou Yanzhi and I were both the kind of people cursed with rotten luck.

I was born in an orphanage, with little family to speak of.

His parents died when he was very young, and he lived like a parasite in his uncle and aunt’s home, cursed at and abused every single day.

The first time I saw him was on a cold winter day.

Zhou Yanzhi was carrying a bucket of oil, dressed in a thin school uniform, his little face pale and bloodless.

The chill in his eyes did not match his age at all.

Only later did I learn that it had not been ordinary oil. It had been gasoline.

If I had not knocked over his bucket of oil, then that night, he would have dragged the uncle and aunt who abused him into a sea of flames with him.

That was the kind of person Zhou Yanzhi was.

Ruthless in heart, ruthless in will, and utterly cold-blooded.

And yet it was someone like him who became a doctor who saved countless lives.

Cheng Yi suddenly said, “Sis, tell me about you. Your husband bought you such an expensive diamond ring. You two must be very much in love, right?”

Looking at the sincerity in her eyes, an idea came to me.

I pretended to wipe away a tear. “My husband… is dead.”

The knife and fork in Cheng Yi’s hands clattered onto her plate, and grief filled her face.

She really was just a young girl. She had no idea how dangerous society could be.

I kept wiping at my tears. “I’m selling the ring because I want to burn more paper money for him.”

Cheng Yi choked up. “Is there a reason for that?”

“Of course there is.” I pointed at the ghost money I had just bought. “I want him to have an easier time down below.”

Cheng Yi looked thoughtful.

I asked, “Has your boyfriend ever burned paper money for his late wife?”
