Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Cheng Yi was a kindhearted girl. She actually burned paper offerings for her boyfriend’s deceased wife.
In less than half a day, I had paid off everything I owed.
With the time I had left, I could finally enjoy my “human” life.
I had just been about to say goodbye to Cheng Yi.
The next second, the two of us were shoved into a police car.
Cheng Yi was so scared she burst into tears.
I calmly looked down at my fingers. It was my first time stealing, after all. I had no experience.
At the police station, the officer lectured me with bitter disappointment.
“Young lady, you’ve got two good hands and feet. You could do anything, so why steal? And of all things, you stole someone’s late wife’s keepsake.”
I mumbled “I’m sorry” over and over.
Not far away, Zhou Yanzhi was frowning as he studied me.
I desperately lowered my head, letting the brim of my hat fall forward to cover my face.
Cheng Yi sobbed and threw herself into his arms.
Zhou Yanzhi turned away coldly. His fingers clamped around her wrist, hard and unyielding. “The ring.”
Cheng Yi stood there at a loss, tears streaming down her face.
Covering her face, she cried helplessly, “I didn’t steal it. I only bought it because I liked it so much. I was tricked too.”
The police stepped in to mediate. “Miss Cheng is indeed innocent. After the thief stole the ring, she sold it to a jewelry store, and Miss Cheng bought it there.”
With that, they returned the ring to Zhou Yanzhi.
Seeing Cheng Yi’s aggrieved expression, Zhou Yanzhi’s cold, rigid look softened. He drew her into his arms and gently coaxed her.
His expression was gentle and calm, but the fingers holding the diamond ring tightened until they flushed red.
I watched them quietly.
At that very moment, Zhou Yanzhi turned his head and met my gaze.
I quickly lowered my eyes, my fingers twisting tightly in my clothes.
An officer came over to take me away.
Cheng Yi held Zhou Yanzhi’s hand and called out oddly, “Why did your hand suddenly get so cold?”
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Zhou Yanzhi expressionlessly fling her hand away.
“Stop.”
My heart pounded like a drum. I quickened my steps.
A burst of commotion suddenly rose behind me.
I whipped around.
Several police officers were holding Zhou Yanzhi back with all their strength, leaving him in a disheveled, almost desperate state.
He struggled to lift his head, the corners of his eyes red as he stared in my direction. “Stop.”
“Dr. Zhou, we understand how you feel after being deceived, but causing a disturbance isn’t the answer. We have to let the law judge the offender…”
Our eyes met again.
My eyes grew a little wet. I gave him an apologetic smile.
“You’ve got the wrong person.”
Then I turned and left.
