Chapter 2

After learning that Wang Cheng had gone missing, I rushed to Peng You’s company.

The moment I reached the entrance, I heard two groups of people shouting and arguing inside.

When Old Li saw me, he hurried over to open the door.

Behind him, Peng You slammed his fist into a young man’s face, and the men that young man had brought with him instantly swarmed forward.

This was Peng You’s company. How could his drivers just stand by and watch their boss get beaten? They immediately grabbed stools and whatever else they could use as weapons.

Just as both sides were about to draw blood, I strode in and barked, “What the hell are you doing?”

The people from Pengyou Company stopped the moment they saw it was me.

I pulled Peng You and the young men apart.

One of them tried to take the chance to land another punch on Peng You, so I kicked him in the hollow of his waist. He went down and didn’t get up for a long while.

“What, do you think it’s still twenty or thirty years ago, when you could just start a fight whenever your temper flared?”

I glared at Peng You. He wasn’t young anymore, and in all these years, I had rarely seen him this impulsive.

Peng You was breathing hard. He raised a hand and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. “Sorry, Brother Long. Made you come all this way again.”

At the words “Brother Long,” the young men, who had still been posturing a moment ago, finally quieted down.

Only then did the man who had been sitting on the sofa behind the crowd stand up. “Mr. Long, long time no see.”

I froze when I saw the man in a suit and leather shoes, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and pretending to be all refined and scholarly.

“Liu Xun? What are you doing here? Didn’t you go to Huayu Port with Wang Cheng?”

“Like hell he did! He never went at all!”

Peng You snapped angrily, “If I’d known that earlier, I never would’ve let Wang Cheng take this trip! This little bastard did it on purpose!”

Now I understood why Peng You was so furious.

The only reason Peng You had agreed to let Wang Cheng go on a haul with Liu Xun was because, like me, he had subconsciously assumed Liu Xun would be personally leading the trucks.

If the boss himself was going out on a run, he would definitely choose a safe, easy route.

Who would have thought that in the end, Liu Xun hadn’t gone at all?

The ones who went were two of Liu Xun’s buddies, both notorious in the circle for being unreliable.

Judging from Wang Cheng’s tone when he had called me before, he must have been kept in the dark too.

Yet now Liu Xun still put on an innocent face and said, “I’m a manager. Driving freight was never my job in the first place. Wang Cheng and I signed a proper contract. He’s the one who didn’t ask clearly.”

“Besides, when people do business, everyone wants things to go smoothly. This time I sent out two trucks, both loaded with medical equipment, and there’s still a large shipment waiting behind them. Huayu Port is waiting to load them onto the ship. Who could have predicted something would happen?”

“I know about that shipment…”

Peng You lowered his voice by my ear. “The schedule was tight, and the stuff wasn’t easy to transport. Every logistics company quoted a pretty high price. Liu Xun was the only one who undercut everyone and snatched the order.”

“That son of a bitch planned from the start to take that old road through Huai Mountain. It’s the fastest route, and he could save a lot on fuel for the round trip!”

I looked at Liu Xun sternly. “Something has already happened. Two heavy trucks have been out of contact for a full day and night. What do you plan to do?”

“I contacted the police and the insurance company immediately,” Liu Xun said, pushing his glasses up with an earnest air.

“It’s just that, regarding the folk customs side of things, I’ll still have to ask Mr. Long for help. After all, everyone is panicking, and no one wants to take a truck out.”

“As for the expenses, I’ll cover the fuel. If the equipment on those two trucks can be delivered on time, I’ll give you another ten percent as compensation for your trouble.”

Old Li listened from the side, his brows knitting together. “That’s not how the math works. Forget the cost of finding them for a moment. If Brother Long makes this trip, you still have to pay him the Chongsha commission.”

“Besides, who knows what state those two trucks are in? What if they can’t be found? So Brother Long takes that huge risk, makes the whole trip, and all he gets is gas money?”

“That’s not the way to put it,” Liu Xun said, arching a brow. “Mr. Long’s good brother is still in that truck, isn’t he?”

“Besides, I heard Wang Cheng isn’t just close with Mr. Long. He’s also related to Boss Peng. You can’t very well just leave him be, can you?”

“Fuck your ancestors-” Peng You’s face flushed red. He rolled up his sleeves and was about to charge over.

Liu Xun’s buddies immediately moved in front of him to protect him, while Old Li hurriedly grabbed Peng You and held him back.
