Chapter 7
Chapter 7
I was walking slowly across the A University campus when I received the apologetic phone call from the Cheng Family.
Although I couldn’t stand for long periods, I made sure to walk a bit every day to prevent muscle atrophy in my legs.
This time, I had come to A University on a whim.
Xu Sixian was finishing his last exam today, and I planned to pick him up, though I hadn’t told him yet.
It was meant to be a surprise.
It wasn’t that I hadn’t done things like this on impulse before, but Cheng Song never seemed particularly surprised by them.
Xu Sixian was different from Cheng Song.
I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of expression he would make when he saw me.
The more I thought about it, the more the corners of my lips curled upward.
As one of the top universities in A City and even the entire country, A University’s campus was exceptionally beautiful, with clean and spacious paths.
The students passing by were also very polite. Even if someone occasionally looked curiously at Uncle Chen pushing the wheelchair and me standing beside it, they only glanced once before quickly looking away.
The head of the Cheng Family was apologizing to me in a state of fear and trepidation. When he mentioned Cheng Song, he cursed him up and down, listing the punishments the family had recently imposed on him one by one. Finally, he asked if I was satisfied with the arrangement.
I didn’t listen closely because I was looking at the soil where my Little Tree was growing.
Since he asked, I just dropped a cold “It’s alright” and hung up the phone.
“Miss, would you like to sit and rest for a while?” Uncle Chen asked.
“It’s fine here, Uncle Chen,” I shook my head. “Xu Little Tree should probably study for a few more years, don’t you think?”
Uncle Chen didn’t call Xu Sixian “Little Tree” like I did.
He called him Young Master Xu now, explaining that since Xu Sixian was my person, his status was now equivalent to that of a young master of the He Family.
“Young Master Xu is limited by his major; pursuing further studies is his best option,” Uncle Chen said. “The path you choose for him, Miss, is naturally the best one.”
“If he wants to work, there are people in the family who can mentor him. If he wants to go abroad, our overseas industries have expanded quite well…” I thought about it, feeling like every option suited him. “I’ll ask him when the time comes and let him choose for himself.”
Uncle Chen seemed a bit surprised, but the emotion vanished in an instant.
“Let’s go. We’ll pick him up after his exam.”
I sat back down in the wheelchair.
This was my first time picking someone up from an exam, and he was the top student in his entire department.
It felt like a very novel experience.
Before we even reached the examination hall, I suddenly saw a familiar figure with a backpack walking out of the teaching building, looking like he was in a hurry.
“Miss, it’s Young Master Xu,” Uncle Chen said. “Should I call out to him?”
“He must have turned in his paper early,” I thought for a moment, a bit of mischief rising within me. “No need. Let’s follow him.”
I planned to get close and give him a fright.
Without a word, Uncle Chen pushed me and followed.
Xu Sixian’s goal was clear, but the place he was walking toward made me more and more confused.
Uncle Chen noted, “That area is the experimental field for A University’s College of Agriculture.”
Agriculture. That had absolutely nothing to do with Xu Sixian’s Materials Science major.
Just as I was wondering about it, I heard someone call his name.
“Xu Sixian!” A soot-covered person emerged from the field. “You’re coming here more often than I am. My supervisor asked me the other day if you were looking to join his research group.”
His voice was loud, but I couldn’t hear what Xu Sixian said in response.
I only saw the boy burst into laughter. “If it weren’t for the fact that you’re a smooth talker, I wouldn’t bother teaching you… Alright, there’s nothing wrong with the cherry tomatoes you’re growing. By the way, does your family run a gardening shop? You’re planting all this random stuff every day.”
Xu Sixian seemed to recall something and offered a faint smile.
The sunlight was warm, gently enveloping his handsome profile.
I froze where I was.
I knew Xu Sixian was busy. When I told him I wanted him to give me plants, it was just a casual remark.
Perhaps the first succulent was one he raised himself, but the second, the third… I never bothered to investigate where he got them from. Or rather, I assumed he had bought them.
But I didn’t care.
I treated people well based purely on my mood. Because what I gave were things that were trivial to me, it didn’t matter whether I received anything in return.
So, coming to the College of Agriculture to learn, stepping into the dirt every day to watch the seeds sprout with his own eyes, just to present me with an entire ocean of green-and doing it all so casually, without saying a single word…
To Xu Sixian, was this gift also something trivial?
It felt as if my heart had been suddenly pricked.
It didn’t exactly hurt; it was a sour, itchy sensation, with damp emotions seeping out bit by bit.
I lowered my eyes. “Let’s go, Uncle Chen. Don’t let him see us.”
