Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Minutes might have passed, or perhaps it was only seconds.
Just as I was growing impatient, Cheng Song finally turned his head to look at me.
He wasn’t completely stupid, after all.
My recent coldness, the sudden backer appearing behind Xu Sixian, the way everyone clammed up around him, and even those faint, strange looks from others-Cheng Song hadn’t failed to notice these things.
But when he actually saw something that belonged to him appearing on Xu Sixian, the blood rushed to his head, and he nearly lost all reason.
“He Lingyue.” Cheng Song’s eyes were bloodshot, and he spoke through gritted teeth. “What is your relationship with him?”
Uncle Chen shifted his weight. Knowing what he intended to do, I stopped him. “Uncle Chen, there’s no need.”
Then, I picked up the hot tea beside me and splashed it directly into Cheng Song’s face.
He didn’t have time to dodge and ended up looking utterly pathetic.
Uncle Chen handed me a tissue. I wiped my hands and asked with feigned curiosity, “Who gave you permission to speak to me like that?”
Cheng Song never expected this reaction from me and froze on the spot.
“Listen, Cheng Song.” I straightened the leaves of the small potted plant in my lap. “I haven’t even settled the score regarding you and that girl yet. You have no right to question me.”
His lips trembled as if waking up from his own world, and his furious expression turned pale.
“You know?” he explained urgently. “Lingyue, Su Wantang and I… it’s not what you think. I only kept it from you because I was afraid you’d be upset.”
I gave a flat “Oh” and asked, “Are you finished?”
“Su Wantang is just a young girl; I hope you can be a bit more magnanimous.” He took a deep breath as if calming himself down. His face was grim, and the tenderness he forced out seemed awkward. “You are my fiancée. You don’t need to compare yourself to others.”
I didn’t say anything at first.
I had been in a good mood and was even prepared to have a civil conversation with him.
Now that I thought about it, my good mood had nothing to do with him.
He was only here to ruin it.
I asked impatiently, “Cheng Song, who do you think you are?”
Cheng Song was stunned.
He had never been humiliated by me like this before and couldn’t process it for a moment.
I grew even more curious. “Have you failed to understand your own position? Telling me to be more magnanimous, telling me not to compare myself… the entire Cheng Family combined isn’t worthy of saying such things to me.”
How annoying.
I’ve always had a bad temper; biting remarks like these came easily to me.
I just never used to say them to him.
It was as if he were a possession of mine-one I felt I should cherish a little.
But now, I felt like throwing him away.
“Let’s go, Uncle Chen,” I said, no longer looking at Cheng Song. “To the conservatory.”
Uncle Chen began pushing my wheelchair to lead me away.
“I get it. You’re jealous, aren’t you? You’re doing this to get back at me, which is why you went after that kid?” Cheng Song chased after us, tea stains still dripping down his face. “Lingyue, let me tell you, he’s up to no good. He’s always acting fake toward Su Wantang. He’s just a bumpkin from the middle of nowhere…”
“Young Master Cheng.” Uncle Chen interrupted him coldly. “Watch your words. You have no right to interfere in the young lady’s affairs.”
Cheng Song instinctively stopped in his tracks.
He feared Uncle Chen and didn’t speak again, though he stared intently at me as if hoping I would call him back.
Uncle Chen had been with the He Family for so long that his status was different from that of an ordinary subordinate.
Even the elders of the Cheng Family bowed and scraped when they saw Uncle Chen, and Cheng Song was always extremely humble and polite toward him.
It was ironic. Uncle Chen was my butler, yet Cheng Song dared to offend me while fearing to offend him.
Once we were out of the elevator, I said, “Give the Cheng Family a lesson.”
“Yes, Miss.”
The Cheng Family wasn’t stupid; they would definitely know Cheng Song had done something wrong.
They would provide me with a satisfactory answer.
This was better than having Uncle Chen beat him up directly. If he left my gallery with a bruised face, people might think the He Family was unreasonable.
Uncle Chen looked at me with a hint of gratification. “The young lady has grown up.”
Even my father, who was far away abroad, called to praise me after hearing the news.
“That boy dared to speak rudely to you? He deserves a lesson.” He cursed Cheng Song first before asking, “But why were you suddenly willing to be so harsh this time?”
After all, having Uncle Chen deliver a beating was a minor matter-it would pass once the injuries healed.
But taking it to the Cheng Family made it a major incident involving a total loss of face.
I huffed. “He called Little Tree a bumpkin from the middle of nowhere, even though I’ve raised him so well.”
My father was completely bewildered. “What?”
Uncle Chen didn’t report every little detail to him, and sponsoring a poor student wasn’t exactly a major event. He didn’t know what I had been up to lately.
However, we were a father and daughter who often had heart-to-heart talks.
“I’ll tell you when you return to the country.” I didn’t explain further. “I just think he’s blind.”
