Chapter 4
Chapter 4
News about Shao Yuhan had been surfacing incessantly over the past few days.
Losing three years of his memory didn’t seem to have affected him at all. One day he was acquiring a company, and the next he was in talks with some high-level executive; his business was thriving even more than before.
He appeared perfectly normal during media interviews as well.
When a host asked if he was considering marriage in the near future, he spoke candidly, stating that he actually had no expectations for love and would most likely enter into a business marriage later on.
“What if you meet a girl you truly like in the future?”
He gave a faint smile. “Even if I did, I probably wouldn’t do anything. I respect the other person’s thoughts.”
I stared at the screen in silence.
Too bad I met him at the wrong time.
Yan Xun came out of the kitchen, carrying a bowl of fermented rice balls loaded with toppings.
“Whoa, you’re being generous today.”
He gave a proud smile. “Of course. It’s to celebrate me getting a job offer.”
“Congratulations! Which company?”
“Shao Group.”
I choked, coughing twice on a rice ball.
“I recall… isn’t the Shao Group headquarters in Dongcheng?”
“They’re opening another branch. Didn’t you see the news?”
He rewound the interview by half an hour.
At that point in the video, Shao Yuhan was speaking eloquently about corporate expansion. The first stop on his roadmap for expansion was our city.
Thinking back to my past experience working like a dog at one of their branches, I offered him a word of caution. “The Shao Group headquarters is great, but the branch offices are usually exhausting.”
“But the pay is high.”
“You’re still young. Why are you in such a rush to make money?”
Yan Xun stole a glance at me before looking away. “Maybe… so I can have more confidence when I pursue the person I like.”
I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination, but it seemed like Yan Xun liked me.
Young men in their early twenties were far too easy to read. The way his face flushed when we made eye contact, the way he fidgeted with his sleeves, and even his habit of miming basketball shots in the air-it all laid his feelings bare.
Unsurprisingly, he confessed to me.
And I rejected him just as decisively.
He was different from Shao Yuhan. When I had rejected Shao Yuhan, he had simply pretended nothing happened the next day, shamelessly claiming that “persistence is a virtue.”
Yan Xun was clearly thinner-skinned. The moment I turned him down, his eyes welled up. He managed to choke out a “Sorry for bothering you” before bolting out the door.
By eleven o’clock that night, he still hadn’t returned. Grandma was pacing around her room in a panic.
Just as I was about to call him, I saw a message he had sent me.
[Sister Zheng, I’m at the police station. Can you come bail me out?]
