Chapter 5

“Impossible!”

Lin Ran shot back without even thinking.

“If she were the Zombie King, she would have bitten me already! Aren’t I still perfectly fine?”

“Ran, you’re too naive.”

Jiang Lan looked at her and shook her head with a sigh, as if she were looking at a clueless child.

Jiang Shu said in a low voice, “Ran Ran, move aside.”

The metal spike in his hand gleamed even brighter.

Lin Ran shielded me with all her might, her voice nearly raw with blood.

“Have you all lost your minds?! Jiang Shu, when those two zombies lunged at me last night, you went to save your sister. If Zhaozhao hadn’t killed those zombies and saved me, I’d already be dead!”

“How could she possibly be the Zombie King you’re talking about?!”

At the mention of what happened last night, Jiang Shu’s expression turned a little unnatural.

Beside him, Jiang Lan said, “Ran, you don’t blame my brother for saving me back then, do you?”

Lin Ran gritted her teeth. “I didn’t say that.”

“If you want your friend to keep traveling with us and put our minds at ease, then have her go out there and prove herself.”

As Jiang Lan spoke, she raised a hand and pointed at the zombies outside the door.

Having caught the scent of the living, they were drifting toward us in twos and threes.

“If she’s not the Zombie King, if she’s not one of their kind, those zombies will definitely bite her.”

“How about it?”

“Are you sick in the head, Jiang Lan?”

Lin Ran flew into a rage and snapped, “Yes, if the zombies bite Zhaozhao, it would prove she isn’t the Zombie King. But would she still be alive after that?”

Jiang Lan’s eyes filled with grievance.

“Brother, look at Ran. I was only making a suggestion, and she talks to me like that.”

“Then I’ll make a suggestion too. You and Zhaozhao can stand outside together and prove yourself as well. How about that?”

Lin Ran refused to give an inch.

Jiang Shu frowned. “Lin Ran, Lanlan is your sister. How can you speak to her like that?”

The hand Lin Ran was holding mine with trembled.

I gently pressed down on her shoulder, organized my words, and slowly said, “Who said I was an ordinary person without an ability?”

“What?!”

“You have an ability???”

Everyone was shocked.

Under their doubtful, startled gazes, Jiang Shu was the first to react.

He frowned, his face full of suspicion. “If you do, then what type is your ability?”

I opened my mouth.

For a moment, I didn’t know how to answer.

My ability… was different from all of theirs.

It had awakened when my brain’s potential was developed to the extreme.

Later, after repeated injections of drugs and the implantation of chips, it had only grown stronger.

Even now, it still had no precise attribute.

Or rather…

Whatever I wanted it to be, that was what it became.

In the silence, Jiang Lan suddenly let out a disdainful snort. “Ran, your friend really is just like you. Lies pour out the moment she opens her mouth.”

“What ability could she possibly have? She’s just scared, isn’t she-ugh!”

Her eyes flew wide with terror.

No one saw how I appeared in front of Jiang Lan and grabbed her by the throat.

No matter how she struggled, she couldn’t break free. All she could do was gasp weakly to Jiang Shu for help. “Brother… save me…”

Jiang Shu roared at me, “Let go of Lanlan!”

I ignored him and simply studied Jiang Lan in my grip.

She was very pretty.

It had been almost three months since the zombie outbreak, yet her lips were still red, her teeth white, and her entire body clean.

One glance was enough to tell that she had been well cared for.

Unlike my Lin Ran.

She had always been tall, and now she was so thin there was almost no color left in her cheeks.

After fleeing all this way, she hadn’t even had time to change her clothes.

She looked as fragile as a wheat stalk in the wind.

I felt an unfamiliar emotion surging in my chest, carrying a faint ache with it.

I tightened my grip slightly.

Jiang Lan’s face flushed crimson, and a hoarse “huh, huh” sound scraped out of her throat.

“Put away your metal blade.”

I suddenly said, “Otherwise, why don’t we test it and see which is faster-your attack, or me snapping her neck?”

Jiang Shu’s hidden movement came to an abrupt stop.

Furious and alarmed, he looked toward Lin Ran. “Ran Ran, hurry up and talk some sense into your friend!”

Lin Ran ignored him and only looked at me with concern.

“Don’t be nervous. I’m just going to ask her a few questions.”

While organizing my words in my mind, I spoke slowly.

“First question. Anyone who awakens an ability also gains mental perception. You should all know very well that I’m human, so why call me the Zombie King and try to drive me away?”

Jiang Lan’s expression turned ugly.

“Second question. All the supplies are stored in your space. Are your hands really clean? Have you ever secretly eaten any?”

“Third question. Are you and Jiang Shu really just ordinary siblings?”

The moment I asked the third question, the faces of the two people in front of me changed at the same time.

In the middle of last night, I had seen it all.

Lin Ran had fallen asleep.

Those two siblings had been behind an abandoned machine, kissing like they couldn’t bear to part.

Jiang Shu’s hand had even slipped under Jiang Lan’s skirt.

In the night, the faint, suppressed sounds had been carried by the wind straight into my ears, especially clear.

A wave of nausea rose inside me, so I stood up and looked over there.

Jiang Shu saw me too.

So he must really want to get rid of me.
