Chapter 2
Chapter 2
“Who are you? How do you have so much food and supplies?”
Lin Ran was still patting me down, checking to make sure I was all right.
The tall man beside her had already walked over, his wary gaze sweeping over me.
I thought for a moment. “I passed through the city and grabbed some on the way.”
The man’s eyes narrowed. “Grabbed some? Do you have any idea how things are now-”
Before he could finish, Lin Ran had already turned around and spread her arms wide, shielding me behind her.
“Ah Shu, she’s my best friend. The one I told you about before-the best friend I’ll ever have in this life.”
“Zhaozhao, this is my husband, Jiang Shu. I got married five years ago.”
After introducing us both, she looked at Jiang Shu earnestly.
“Let her come with our squad!”
Jiang Shu said nothing.
Behind him, the spatial ability user walked over.
“Sister Ran, don’t take this the wrong way, but we’re an elite squad. Bringing along a normal person with no ability like you is already holding us back enough.”
“If we take your friend too, are we even still going to T City Base?”
Lin Ran’s face went cold. “Jiang Lan, if you won’t take her with us, then give back her chocolate.”
“You!”
Jiang Lan’s face flushed with anger, and she turned back to Jiang Shu to whine.
“Brother, look at Sister Ran. Why does she keep taking an outsider’s side?”
“Enough. Stop arguing.”
Jiang Shu gave the final order.
“She handed over all her supplies, so we should protect her. Ran Ran, your friend can come with us.”
“That’s settled. No one is allowed to object.”
Lin Ran’s eyes curved into happy crescents.
Beside her, Jiang Lan’s expression chilled, and she rolled her eyes at me.
I swept my mental power over her entire body.
Her mental power was weak.
A space of less than three cubic meters-the most basic level of spatial ability.
I could kill her with barely a thought.
But.
I glanced at Lin Ran beside me.
…It might affect her.
I would let it go for now.
The convoy traveled for two days before entering a small town.
Just like when we were little, Lin Ran still loved to talk.
Along the way, I learned from her that after I was “adopted,” she got into college. In her sophomore year, she started dating Jiang Shu, and they got married as soon as she graduated.
Two months ago, the zombie virus broke out worldwide.
Jiang Shu awakened an extremely rare metal-type ability, allowing him to control metal in combat.
As for that spatial ability user, Jiang Lan, she was Jiang Shu’s younger sister from his blended family.
The two of them were not related by blood.
“Those two siblings have such a good relationship. Sometimes I’m honestly jealous. After all, once you left, I was always alone.”
Lin Ran sighed as she spoke.
“I also have a son. His name is Lin Yutong. He’s four this year and still in kindergarten.”
“The day the zombie outbreak happened, he had gone to Haicheng with his summer camp. I asked Jiang Shu to bring him back, but he couldn’t find him.”
“Later, Jiang Shu got in touch with the summer camp. They said everyone had flown to T City ahead of schedule because of another activity.”
“That’s why we’re heading to the large safe base in T City. Once we get there, you’ll be able to meet him.”
As she spoke, Lin Ran propped her chin in her hands and smiled at me.
“Tongtong knows about you, Zhaozhao! I’m always telling him that his mom has a really, really good friend named Lu Zhao.”
“I told him lots of stories about when we were kids at the welfare home. He knows you like paper cranes, so he folded hundreds of them. He said he’ll give them to Auntie Zhaozhao when the time comes.”
I looked at her smile.
And felt my mind, stagnant as dead water, slowly, slowly…
A faint ripple spread through it.
“Okay.”
I opened my palm toward her.
Several pieces of chocolate lay in my hand.
Lin Ran’s eyes widened at once.
I smiled and said, “These are for Tongtong.”
