Chapter 3
Chapter 3
That night, we rested in an abandoned factory far from any crowds.
Lin Ran came over to me with two buns tucked in her arms. “Zhaozhao, eat this.”
After countless modifications, my body could maintain normal function without much need for food.
But when I saw her bright, sparkling eyes, I still took the bun from her.
Lin Ran sat down beside me and took a bite of her own. “Where on earth have you been for the past ten years? How did you suddenly find your way here?”
I was silent for a moment.
My eyes fixed on the warm, soft bun in my hand.
But what surfaced in my mind was that cold experimental building.
Countless precise instruments. Researchers in white coats coming and going.
“Attempting injection of the latest drug into Experimental Subject 09!”
“Increase the chip’s stimulation current!”
“No! She’s going berserk!!”
There was a deafening crash.
My mental power was so intense that it shattered the glass of the experimental tank.
By the time reason returned to my mind, I realized the entire laboratory building was empty.
Corpses lay scattered all over the floor.
I picked up a piece of clothing at random and put it on.
Then I stared blankly into the distance.
“Lin Ran…”
I muttered to myself,
“I should go find Lin Ran…”
…
“I went somewhere rather special. During that time, it wasn’t convenient to contact the outside world.”
In the end, I only gave her a vague answer.
“After I got out, I wanted to see you, so I came to find you.”
“Zhaozhao~”
Lin Ran threw herself into my arms at once.
She nuzzled against me again and again.
“I knew you loved me most.”
“Hmph. Jiang Shu even said you must have been adopted by some rich family and started living the good life, so you didn’t want to contact me anymore. I never believed him!”
“I told him already. He just can’t understand the bond between us.”
That was true.
Who could understand it?
During the ten years I was part of the experiment, not even the world’s top scientists could understand.
The stimulation caused by excessive doses of drugs meant to unlock the brain’s potential was enough to make a person die from the pain alone.
Yet I endured over a hundred injections and still survived.
Of the one hundred experimental subjects sent in with me, I was the only one left alive in the end.
Through the glass, I often heard them say:
“Experimental Subject 09 is a gift from God.”
But there was no God.
I only vaguely remembered that someone had once told me:
“Zhaozhao, even when we’re a hundred years old, we’ll still be best friends.”
I had to live to be a hundred.
I couldn’t break my promise.
