Chapter 9

“Let’s walk a little faster, and a little further.”

Those were the words He Zhi said the first time she came to pick me up from work.

I had promised to take her to dinner after my shift, but I hadn’t expected her to be waiting for me right outside the law firm.

I was walking out with my colleagues when I saw her running toward me from a distance.

She was on the sidewalk, not even looking where she was going, and I instinctively took a couple of steps forward to meet her.

She arrived before me like a gust of wind, and a second later, she took my hand. “Let’s go! Time for dinner.”

Back then, the looks my colleagues gave me were quite strange.

I was dressed in a serious business suit, while He Zhi still looked like a girl who hadn’t quite shed her youthful innocence. Standing together, we truly were a mismatched pair.

I could already imagine the gossip that would soon spread throughout the law firm.

But at the time, I didn’t care. I let He Zhi pull me across the street.

When I turned back to say goodbye to my colleagues, they were all watching me with peculiar expressions.

He Zhi was a smart kid; she noticed it too, of course.

So, she said loudly, “Let’s walk a little faster, and a little further.”
