Back then, He Zhi was very serious about studying the law.

I remember coming home once to find only a single lamp lit. She was sitting under its glow, leafing through a thick volume on economic law.

I was in a rush to grab some documents and hurried past her, only pausing to ask, “Your Gaokao is coming up soon. Shouldn’t you be focusing on your review?”

“I want to study law too, just like you,” she answered with a bright smile as she looked up.

“What, you want to go bald?”

I grabbed her backpack and set it on the table, reminding her, “Focus on preparing for the Gaokao first.”

With that, I grabbed my files and headed back out to the law firm to work overtime.

As the Gaokao drew near, He Zhi’s parents were placed under administrative detention for throwing objects from a high-rise building. Her aunt, who was her temporary guardian, wanted to take her out of town, but He Zhi refused to go. Instead, she called me from the police station.

“Can you take me in for a while? Just for two weeks.”

At the time, I was in the middle of an embezzlement case for one of the law firm’s major clients. I was swamped and overwhelmed.

Even so, I gave her the spare key to my place.

From then on, the first thing I did when I arrived at the law firm every morning was no longer opening my case files.

The first thing I did was open a food delivery app to pre-order her lunch and dinner.
