1107 liked to rummage through my bookshelf, which was lined with various thick, obscure volumes of legal statutes.

She couldn’t understand those laws, so she would ask me things like, “What is the ‘crime of intentionally delaying mail delivery’?”

Before I could answer, she burst out laughing. “Who wrote this sticky note?”

I took the note from her. It was slightly yellowed; it had been there for a while.

1107 then pulled countless more notes out from the books.

The handwriting on them was clear and elegant, using simple, almost childish language to explain the difficult legal jargon.

1107 smiled. “Oh, she wrote these, didn’t she?”

“She” referred to He Zhi. I didn’t answer.

1107 straightened up and gently snatched the note from my hand. “Her handwriting isn’t very nice. From now on, just look at what I write, okay?”

I simply replied, “Whatever.”

I watched as she sat there without any sense of decorum, lazily leaning over the windowsill. She picked out the yellow notes He Zhi had written one by one, copied them word for word, and then tucked her own versions back into the books.

The yellow scraps were crumpled into balls and tossed into the trash.

Surprisingly, I felt no emotion at all.
