Chapter 4
Damn it!
The man I had loved for so many years was not supposed to look like this, half-dead and barely holding on.
What I loved was the bright, youthful boy he had been on campus. I loved the righteousness and masculine strength he exuded from head to toe. I loved how quick his mind was when he solved cases, and how decisive and brave he was when carrying out missions.
He pressed one hand over his chest and strained to support himself as he tried to come inside.
Afraid he might be at a disadvantage, Ah Qi wanted to follow him in.
Lin Jun merely lifted his hand, and Ah Qi obediently backed out, even thoughtfully closing the door behind him.
Immediately after, every device in the interrogation room was switched off, leaving only a single lamp for light.
Lin Jun staggered over to the seat across from me and sat down. In a quiet voice, he said, “I want to talk to you. Not as a police officer, but simply as someone you know.”
I sighed softly and couldn’t help smiling. “Senior, you’re being far too polite. We’ve known each other for so many years. As long as you’re willing to talk to me, I will tell you everything I know, without holding anything back.”
Lin Jun gave a slight nod and went straight to the point. “Were all those people killed by you?”
Without the slightest hesitation, I nodded. “Yes. I killed them all.”
I clearly saw his expression change. In that instant, both his hands clenched into fists. If his body had allowed it, I guessed he would have punched me hard.
“Why?” His fists slammed heavily onto the table with a sound like a drumbeat. “For what?”
In an even tone, I said, “For you.”
He raised his eyes and stared straight at me, looking utterly incredulous.
I smiled again. Countless times, I had imagined what expression he would have when he learned the truth and sat face-to-face with me to discuss it.
I had to admit, he did not disappoint me. He gave me exactly the reaction I wanted.
“Weren’t you the one who insisted that there is no such thing as a perfect crime? Didn’t you say that as long as a criminal commits a crime, they will definitely leave traces behind?”
“If not for that shoe print, if not for Zang Qing’s final words before he died-‘I recognized you’-if not for the ‘blind persons’ glasses’ advertisement posted on the hospital wall, would you ever have imagined that the true culprit you were desperately hunting was so close to you all along?”
Lin Jun shook his head. “No. You are absolutely not the kind of person who would destroy her own life just to obtain a man.”
“Mm.” I nodded and praised him. “Although you don’t love me, it seems you do understand me quite well.”
“I, Qi Jun, am the dignified daughter of a major listed corporation. I sit on a fortune worth hundreds of millions. Whatever I want, I only have to wave my hand and I can have it. Men with conditions like yours-if I wanted them, I could fill several grand auditoriums.”
At that, he seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
Of course. Otherwise, those innocent citizens, along with that poor scapegoat Zang Qing, would all have died because of him.
For someone like him, who saw himself as bearing the great mission of protecting the people, how unbearable would that be?
But the very moment he relaxed, I added, “However, the only man who ever dared reject me was you, Lin Jun.”
“I hate you. So I wanted revenge on you. You made me love you without ever being able to have you, so I will make you spend every day and every night of the rest of your life drowning in guilt and self-blame.”
His emotions instantly slipped out of control, and he covered his mouth as he began to cough.
I stood up and looked down at him from above. “Are you regretting it now? Are you thinking that if you’d known rejecting me back then would cause such a disaster, you never would have said that one little word, ‘no,’ no matter what?”
