Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Twenty-four hours passed in the blink of an eye.
Lu Ziran had already taken care of everything, but just as I was about to leave the police station, Ah Qi stepped out and blocked our way.
I took a deep breath and reminded him, “Ah Qi, according to procedure, given how close you are to Captain Lin, it isn’t appropriate for you to handle this case. Who can guarantee you won’t let personal feelings get involved?”
“Who told you the case I’m handling right now is Captain Lin’s Poisoning Case?” Ah Qi shot me a sideways glance and said angrily, “Qi Jun, we suspect you of murdering ten innocent citizens. Please cooperate with our investigation.”
“What?”
Ha!
Interesting.
I was about to say something else when Ah Qi cut me off. “You used to be a police officer. You know that at a time like this, you should cooperate with the police investigation.”
And just like that, I was brought back into the interrogation room.
This time, however, they didn’t ask me any questions.
After who knew how long, they brought in a pair of men’s shoes and a tray of mud.
They wanted to get my footprints and compare them to the ones I had deliberately left in the sewer that day.
I curled my lips. “You really think this can be used as evidence?”
Ah Qi snapped in displeasure, “Shut up. Your job is to cooperate with our investigation. Stay out of everything else.”
I clicked my tongue in disdain and provoked him. “Fine. Then I’ll give you another twenty-four hours.”
After that, they didn’t question me again. I simply waited alone in the interrogation room, quietly recalling the scenes of the murders, thinking over whether I had left any flaws behind.
But before I ever made my move, whether it was choosing my victims or selecting a scapegoat, I had done so with meticulous care.
The victims absolutely could not be local residents.
First, they had no other relatives living with them, which made them easy targets. Second, once the matter was settled, no family members would come digging the case back up. Even if there was an investigation, the distance and jurisdictional issues would make it far more difficult.
As for the scapegoat, he had to be completely alone. There could be no loose ends.
The case would end with his death, completely and utterly. No one would ever come seeking justice on his behalf.
The more I thought about it, the more pleased I felt.
If not for the clues I had deliberately left behind, Lin Jun probably never would have suspected me, not even on his deathbed.
Suddenly, the door creaked open. I lifted my eyes and saw Lin Jun standing in the doorway, wearing a blue-and-white hospital gown, looking utterly haggard.
