Chapter 3

It wasn’t until Wen Jun’an was standing at the school gates that he found out we were in the same class.

My transfer had been abrupt, and when it came to the paperwork, my parents had simply thrown money at the problem to save themselves the trouble.

In other words, my grades at my old school didn’t matter.

More than half of the second semester of sophomore year had already passed. It made no difference which class I ended up in.

Wen Jun’an was delighted. “Same class works too. From now on, I’ll have your back.”

“…”

When the homeroom teacher led me up to the podium, I finally got a clear look at everyone in the class.

Even tucked away in the corner, Wen Jun’an’s head of red hair was exceptionally eye-catching.

And the moment the homeroom teacher finished introducing me, he was the first to start clapping. “Welcome, new student!”

The students below the podium began whispering among themselves.

“So this is Brother An’s long-lost sister. She really does look like him.”

“She looks so well-behaved. Looking at her, Brother An would probably be pretty cute in women’s clothes too, hehe…”

I had no idea what Wen Jun’an had told the class during the time we’d split up to find the homeroom teacher.

In any case, it seemed they all knew me already.

“Wen Lingyun, you can go to your seat.”

The newly vacated desk in the class was mine. It was toward the back.

Wen Jun’an sat behind me to the left. Right then, he lifted his chin at me, showing off his connections in the class and proving that he did, in fact, have the ability to “have my back.”

“…”

During the break, aside from Wen Jun’an, a whole circle of people gathered around my desk.

They stared at me like they were looking at some rare animal.

“Brother An, no wonder your family managed to find the kid they lost over ten years ago. One look and you can tell she’s your family’s biological child. She looks like she was stamped out of the same mold as you.”

“Sister, I’m Chen Zhou, your brother’s good friend.”

“Sister, I’m Xu Jinche. We’re classmates from now on.”

“Sister, my name is Zhou Yue. Our families live pretty close to each other. Come hang out with me when you’re free!”

The moment they finished speaking, however, Wen Jun’an elbowed them.

“Hold on. Who do you think you’re taking advantage of? This Sis of mine was born the same year, same month, same day as me. She’s only a dozen minutes younger,” Wen Jun’an corrected them. “Call her big sis.”

“…”

The chuunibyou teenager with a head of red hair got to be the big brother among the crowd, so his younger sister, born only a dozen minutes after him, had to be the big sister too.

On my first day after transferring, I truly felt the scent of money wafting through this school.

Most of the students were either rich or powerful.

The few classmates who kept their heads down and studied hard got along quite well with them too. My deskmate, Jiang Yuyun, was one of them.

She was a publicly funded student whom the school had signed back in middle school.

After she mentioned how much the school had paid to recruit her, I fell silent for a moment.

Jiang Yuyun continued, “It’d be great if I could make it into the top five of the grade. Then I’d get a higher-tier scholarship. I know that amount of money doesn’t mean much to people like you, but for my family, it’s already a lot…”

I interrupted her. “It’s a lot. It’s a lot to me too.”

Although after I came back, my parents had already opened a new card for me and transferred a sum of money into it, I had been poor for too long. Only an idiot turned down money they could earn.

Immersed in my grief over having lost out on a sum of money, I angrily worked through two math papers during math class.

At noon, Wen Jun’an took me to the cafeteria.

He stared at me for a long while before suddenly speaking. “Sis.”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t you feel like you’re missing something?”

“Missing what?”

“A little of the youthful energy your brother has!” He looked at me sincerely. “How about you dye that thing on your head red? That way, the second people see you, they’ll know you’re my sister.”

“…”

I politely declined Wen Jun’an’s suggestion.

He condemned me for failing to understand his aesthetic sense.
