Chapter 2
Chapter 2
After dinner, my brother and sister by blood both stared straight at me.
As if they were trying to make flowers bloom on my face through sheer force of will.
Wen Shuyan spoke first. “Sis, you and my brother look pretty alike, so why are you so much prettier than him?”
“Wen Shuyan, what is that supposed to mean? I’m your brother!”
The girl, two years younger than him, rolled her eyes. “You being my brother doesn’t mean I can’t tell the truth.”
The easy familiarity between the two siblings wasn’t something I could match. When they started bickering, I couldn’t find a place to cut in.
But they seemed very curious about the life I’d lived before. Wen Shuyan asked, “Sis, you’ve grown up healthy and pretty all these years. Didn’t any families ever want to adopt you?”
My memories drifted far away.
After a moment, I said, “I was adopted by three families, one after another.”
The siblings in front of me widened their similar eyes in perfect sync.
“But within two years of adopting me, each of them had children of their own.”
It was strange, now that I thought about it. The couples who came to the welfare home to adopt were usually older or had been diagnosed with fertility issues. At first, they had all treated me very well.
But once they had children of their own, they began to feel I was taking resources that should have belonged to their biological child. And so, for one reason or another, I was sent back.
Later, as I got older, the families who came to adopt children all chose younger kids instead.
After hearing that, Wen Jun’an blurted out, “Good lord, you’re basically a walking fertility charm!”
“…”
Then my biological little sister asked another question.
“Sis, what’s your zodiac sign? Let me calculate your luck. How can one person be this unlucky?”
“My brother’s a Virgo. What are you?”
“…”
Meeting her sincere gaze, I reminded her, “Your brother and I are twins.”
“Right. He’s a Virgo. What are you?”
Beside her, Wen Jun’an didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with that either.
The siblings’ eyes were identically clear and innocent.
“…”
After my parents brought me home, my school records were transferred over as well.
I ended up at the same school as Wen Jun’an and Wen Shuyan, a private school with both a high school and a middle school division.
On the day I went to register, Wen Jun’an asked, “Sis, what class are you in again?”
Every time he called me that, I could practically hear a rustic northeastern drawl coming out of his mouth.
Even though he sounded perfectly normal when he said anything else.
“If anything happens at school, just come find me. Your brother’s got some influence around here.”
Next to us, Wen Shuyan was muttering to herself before we left the house. “Today’s lucky color is green…”
Then I saw that she was dressed entirely in green, with a string of imperial green jadeite beads on her wrist. Even the bag she carried out the door was green.
“…”
Great. My two blood-related siblings consisted of one delusional teenage edgelord and one magical girl.
