Chapter 4

Su Sangsang panicked for a split second.

Then she remembered that she and the System were talking inside her head. No one else could hear them.

She went up to him affectionately, her tone a little coy. “Nothing. I was watching TV. That was the sound from the show.”

Shen Ci gave a faint hum and didn’t dwell on it.

He opened the bag he was carrying. “Your favorite crab roe pastries. Fresh out of the oven.”

The joy on Su Sangsang’s face froze. She forced out a smile. “Ah Ci, are you remembering wrong? I don’t like crab roe pastries.”

“Really? But why do I remember that we first met because of a dessert shop?”

Shen Ci had a cold personality. Su Sangsang had gotten to know him by staging a chance encounter at a dessert shop.

Then she pretended that she loved crab roe pastries too, using it to close the distance between them.

But Su Sangsang had never taken it to heart. After all, back then, the whole script had been designed for her by the System.

Shen Ci said, “Don’t sulk just because I came home late. If you don’t want to eat them, forget it.”

I drifted over to Shen Ci’s side.

Taking advantage of the fact that he couldn’t see me, I carefully leaned closer to the crab roe pastries.

I didn’t know whether Su Sangsang liked them or not.

But I loved them dearly.

Back when Shen Ci and I were dating, every time we argued, he would buy a box of crab roe pastries and bring them back.

He was tall and broad, with a fierce-looking face, and the pale yellow bag in his hand always looked completely out of place with him.

“Qingqing, can you forgive the awful Shen Ci today? If not, I’ll come ask again tomorrow.”

After I died, he picked up a paintbrush with his rough fingers, painted them for me, and burned the drawings as offerings.

But ever since Su Sangsang appeared, I hadn’t received any in a very long time.

Shen Ci’s hand no longer picked up a brush. My crab roe pastries had been given to someone else too.

All at once, I felt a little angry. I said, “Crab roe pastries are the most disgusting thing in the world. I don’t like them at all.”

Then, as if venting my frustration, I raised my hand and swung it at Shen Ci’s shoulder.

But at that exact moment, Shen Ci suddenly turned his head, and my palm slapped him across the face instead.

He clearly shouldn’t have been able to hear what I said. He clearly shouldn’t have been able to feel my movements.

But Shen Ci’s eyelashes trembled, and he suddenly looked straight at me. “Why don’t you like them anymore? Are you still angry?”

Our eyes met without warning. I froze where I was.

For a moment, I almost thought Shen Ci could see me. But then Su Sangsang’s voice came from behind me.

“Ah Ci, I’m not angry. I just ate too much at dinner, so I can’t eat anything else…”

So he had been asking Su Sangsang.

My heart settled back down, yet I couldn’t stop a trace of sadness from rising inside me.

The System reminded Su Sangsang, “Host, you’re allergic to seafood. You’ve already achieved your goal, so from now on, don’t touch things like crab roe pastries. Find an excuse and avoid them.”

Su Sangsang gave a casual hum in reply.

I wanted to tell Shen Ci that it was Su Sangsang and the System inside her head who had killed me.

My illness could have been cured. We should have spent our lives together, hand in hand.

But Shen Ci couldn’t see me, and he couldn’t hear my voice.

My last chance to enter his dreams had been used up asking about that necklace.

And Shen Ci’s answer to me had been silence.

The three necklaces had already served their purpose, and the destined heroine had appeared.

As the person who had once been closest to him, I could naturally see how differently Shen Ci treated Su Sangsang.

Suddenly, I felt a little lost. Was a white moonlight who had been dead for three years still a white moonlight?

If Shen Ci learned of the System’s existence, if he learned the reason my condition had worsened back then…

Would it truly bring the truth to light?

Or would it only add more trouble to Shen Ci’s life, just when he was finally starting to get better?
