Chapter 3

After I finished making the call, I threw the unregistered SIM card away.

If I went to the police station and reported that my husband wanted to kill me and dismember my body, the police would ask why, and what evidence I had.

I wouldn’t be able to produce a thing. Duan Kai might even turn around and accuse me of being mentally ill.

So an anonymous tip was the best option.

I just hoped the police would move quickly and deal with those two scumbags as soon as possible.

Just then, my phone rang. It was my aunt calling.

“Nana, where did you go?”

My aunt’s voice was frantic. “Duan Kai said you disappeared. He’s looking for you everywhere. He called every relative in our family one by one, and he’s so anxious he’s about to call the police.”

A surge of anger came over me for no reason. “He’s not worried about me. He wants my lottery ticket!”

My aunt asked, “What lottery ticket?”

I snapped at her. “If you hadn’t introduced me to that bastard back then, I wouldn’t have died! Do you know he cheated on me? He even wants to kill me! It’s all your fault. What kind of intentions did you have?”

My aunt’s temper flared too. “Nana, that’s a heartless thing to say. In this world, other than your aunt, who else cares about you? Yes, I introduced Duan Kai to you, but if you didn’t like him, who forced you to date him? This morning, you were happily telling me that the two of you were going to get your marriage certificate. That means you liked that he had a decent, respectable job as a teacher, and that you liked him. So why are you blaming me now?”

I was so angry that I hung up.

After yelling at my aunt, regret immediately washed over me.

My aunt had a sharp tongue, but she was kindhearted. She treated me even better than her own daughter.

When I was in middle school, my uncle cheated on her and forced her to divorce him.

He disliked that my cousin was a girl, refused to take his daughter, and took his son away with him.

All these years, my aunt and my cousin had relied on each other to survive, running a flower shop and living a very difficult life.

I really shouldn’t have yelled at her.

I sent my aunt a text. “I’m sorry, Auntie. I’m just in a bad mood.”

As soon as I sent it, my cousin video-called me.

Once I picked up, my cousin Bai Tang’s delicate, pretty face appeared on the screen.

We were cousins and had grown up together since we were children, so we looked somewhat alike.

“Nana, what’s wrong?” My cousin looked worried. “After my mom got off the phone with you just now, she kept crying and cursing you for being an ungrateful little ingrate who knows exactly how to hurt people.”

I sighed. “I couldn’t control my emotions just now and yelled at Auntie. Please apologize to her for me.”

My cousin asked cautiously, “What’s going on between you and Duan Kai? He came to my house earlier looking for you, all aggressive, saying you won the lottery and then turned your back on him. My mom defended you, and the two of them almost got into a fight. Did you really win the lottery? How much did you win?”

I couldn’t tell my cousin in detail about the terrifying things that had happened in my previous life, so I could only say, “Duan Kai cheated on me. I’m not going to stay with him. Where is he? Is he still at your place?”

My cousin shook her head. “He couldn’t find you, so he slammed the door and left. He said he was going to the police station to report you missing.”

I frowned and thought for a moment. “Cuz, I need you to do me a favor.”

She said, “Just tell me.”

I lowered my voice. “If the police really come looking for me, tell them Duan Kai cheated on me, so I went abroad to clear my head. In any case, I won’t be seeing him anytime soon.”

“Okay.” My cousin nodded. “Nana, you’re going abroad?”

I hummed in confirmation and casually told a lie. “I’ve already bought the plane ticket. I’m planning to go to Country H for a few days.”

My cousin said gently, “Be careful while you’re out there. If you run out of money, tell me. I’ll transfer some to you.”

A wave of bitterness rose in my heart.

No matter when, family was family. They would always stand on my side and always care about me.
