Chapter 1
Chapter 1
My name is Jiang Nanfeng, and I’m a recent medical graduate from Nanda University.
My husband is Ling Changjun. He’s a lecturer at Nanda University and a doctor at Nanyi Hospital.
Usually, my husband is gentle, elegant, and kind. He has no history of mental illness.
His death was beyond bizarre.
I sat at his desk in a daze as a brightly colored butterfly fluttered by the window.
*Ding.*
An email appeared in my inbox.
The sender was Ling Changjun.
I held my breath, my heart racing, as all my attention focused on that message.
It was a long letter, documenting every little detail of how Ling Changjun and I met and fell in love.
Our story began with a moment of pure social suicide.
That day, I was heading to take the CET-6 English exam.
Before the test, I rushed to the restroom in a hurry, only for my chest to suddenly collide with something-hard.
I looked to my left. A handsome guy with delicate features had stopped mid-chest expansion exercise, frozen like a statue.
The hand that had just struck my chest hung awkwardly in mid-air…
And that handsome guy turned out to be my professor, Ling Changjun.
Our next meeting was in his class. I was trying to help my three deadbeat roommates by answering the roll call for them.
I’m a voice actress, so I can manipulate my voice into various tones; covering for a few people was well within my capabilities.
However, every time I answered a name, Ling Changjun would look at me with a faint smile.
I used a loli voice, a mature woman’s voice, and my natural voice. He didn’t call me out once.
Finally, he reached my own name. I looked up to see the smile crinkling the corners of his eyes. His lips curled upward as he waited for me to use a fourth voice…
But I was stuck. I didn’t have a fourth voice left in my repertoire.
“Jiang Nanfeng? Is Student Jiang Nanfeng not here?” Ling Changjun glanced around the classroom, adjusting his glasses.
The classmates who knew me started laughing and looking my way. In a moment of sheer brain-dead desperation, I answered the roll in a “young puppy” boyish voice right in front of everyone.
Ling Changjun laughed heartily, revealing a row of straight, white teeth. “Oh? It seems Student Jiang Nanfeng is actually a handsome young man.”
Roars of laughter erupted throughout the classroom.
My face was beet red, and I wanted nothing more than to crawl under the desk and disappear.
When I accidentally looked up, I met those clear, shimmering eyes.
From that moment on, love bloomed in my heart.
I couldn’t help but smile as I read the letter, but as I did, a salty taste reached the corners of my mouth.
His scent still lingered in the room, and his tenderness felt like it was only yesterday. How could he possibly be dead?
It was impossible.
“Nanfeng, shortly after this, the police will find a dismembered body under the Wutong trees on Jinxi Street (the street right outside our house). If they question you, say nothing. Wait for my second email.”
That sentence appeared at the very end of the letter.
A dismembered body?
In an instant, goosebumps broke out all over my skin, and a chill ran down my spine.
Sure enough, three days later, the police arrived at my door.
They informed me that a dismembered body had been found under the Wutong trees in front of my house. There were five body parts in total, hidden separately under five different trees.
They showed me photos of the remains, and I was too shocked to speak.
The body was unrecognizable, but on the left forearm, there was a blue butterfly tattoo.
I would recognize that tattoo even if it were burned to ash, because I have the exact same one. My brother, Jiang Mengzhou, had forced me to get matching tattoos with him.
So, this body belonged to my brother, Jiang Mengzhou.
But remembering the final sentence of the email, I said nothing. I remained stiff and silent as I endured the police questioning.
By then, I was so pale with fright that I couldn’t speak coherently anyway.
Seeing my state, the police offered a few words of comfort and left without further inquiry.
The moment the door closed, my legs gave out, and I collapsed onto the floor.
