Chapter 3

Jiang Yunbai and I stood in front of the breakfast shop.

Neither of us spoke.

We were both broke.

Pei Yu said, “My treat.”

Jiang Yunbai and I instantly ordered a mountain of breakfast.

“How did you two end up together?”

“He confessed to me first.”

Pei Yu furrowed his brow. His lips parted slightly, but in the end, he said nothing.

As we were talking, a dozen Yellow Hair thugs came roaring over on motorcycles. The one Jiang Yunbai had beaten black and blue stood cowering at the very front.

“Boss, it’s them! They’re the ones who hit me!”

“So you’re the ones who hurt my brother?”

Jiang Yunbai and I kept our heads down and drank our porridge.

Only Pei Yu met their eyes, cold and indifferent.

At this point, there was only one thing to do.

Retreat was the best strategy.

At my command-“Run!”

The contrast between the dead silence and our mad sprint was dramatic.

After we shook off the Yellow Hair thugs by several streets, I stopped, panting for breath.

Jiang Yunbai and I high-fived in perfect sync. “Whew. There aren’t many people in the country who can outrun the three of us.”

“I’ve decided to sign up for the Olympics.”

“Where’s Pei Yu?”

“He can only sign up for the Paralympics…”

Right.

Where was Pei Yu?

Jiang Yunbai and I looked at each other.

…

Oh my god. We forgot about him.

I immediately sprinted back the way we’d come.

Behind me, Jiang Yunbai roared, “You can’t do anything by yourself! You need to find more people!”

I ran while sobbing. “I can’t! As someone’s wife, I have to be loyal! Hurry up and find more people!”

When I got back to the scene, I saw Pei Yu leisurely wiping his lips with a napkin before rising elegantly to his feet.

His left leg wasn’t very flexible, but it didn’t diminish his presence at all.

He let out a laugh.

In front of him, the Yellow Hair thug was still running his mouth.

“Pay up protection money, and I’ll spare your worthless life today.”

Pei Yu gave a derisive snort and clenched his fist.

Then he punched Yellow Hair.

This time, it was Yellow Hair’s turn to stagger.

Me: “!”

Holy crap. Pei Yu had that much guts?

I took a deep breath and coaxed myself into going over to protect Pei Yu.

No, I couldn’t. I was afraid of pain.

So all I could do was close my eyes and charge between Pei Yu and Yellow Hair.

“If you’ve got a problem, come at me! Don’t touch my boyfriend!”

Pei Yu looked at me in surprise. “Why did you come back?”

Of course it was for the fifty-million-yuan prize.

While he was at it, he hooked an arm around my waist and pulled me behind him.

“Jiang Yunbai already went to get help. We just need to hold out.”

The gang leader had been thoroughly provoked.

“You people are asking to die.”

I looked around for a handy weapon.

But I couldn’t even find a brick.

Pei Yu clicked his tongue.

“You leave first. It’s not your turn to protect me yet.”

He said irritably, “I only broke my leg. I’m not dead.”

Right.

I crouched down and rolled up his pant leg.

“Your prosthetic is made of steel, right?”

I looked up at him.

For some reason, the tips of Pei Yu’s ears turned red.

“Yes. Now get up.”

I pressed down on his shoulder and made him sit.

Then I grabbed his prosthetic leg. It had this insanely cool cyberpunk design. Who would’ve thought Pei Yu would even have such a refined prosthetic?

For a moment, the thugs froze.

The Yellow Hair thug Pei Yu had hit was even more recklessly stupid.

“Hahaha, so you’re a cripple? And here I thought you were some big shot!”

I swung the prosthetic leg in a full arc and smacked Yellow Hair with it.

“Did you brush your teeth before leaving the house today? Why does your mouth stink so bad?”

Yellow Hair collapsed from the blow, the right side of his face swollen and red.

I turned to Pei Yu in surprise. “You know what? This prosthetic actually makes a pretty handy weapon!”

Pei Yu sneered. “Heh.”

Just as the thugs were about to move, a stern shout rang out behind me.

“Stop right there!”

That tone was so familiar.

I turned around.

I saw the disciplinary director, Lao Wang, pinching Jiang Yunbai by the ear. Behind him was a massive crowd of First High School students in blue-and-white uniforms, all holding score sheets.

Why had Lao Wang brought the entire student council with him?

I made frantic faces at Jiang Yunbai. “What is going on?”

Jiang Yunbai looked very innocent. “The second you ran off, I turned around and saw Lao Wang coming over with the student council. He said the breakfast shop owner reported us for dating too young.”

Lao Wang smacked Jiang Yunbai on the head.

“Show some respect! Jiang Yunbai, out of the three hundred school rules, you’ve already broken two hundred and ninety-nine. The only one left was dating too young, and I thought you at least had your own bottom line. But now you’re out here ruining a female classmate.”

Lao Wang glanced at me, then turned to look at Jiang Yunbai again. “I’ve said it before. Love at your age can’t withstand any tests. Look, the moment she saw me, she abandoned you.”

Jiang Yunbai said lazily, “Lao Wang, I’m not dating anyone.”

Pei Yu frowned, gripped my arm, and pulled me a little closer.

Lao Wang noticed our movements.

He immediately changed targets, directing his fire at the thugs.

“And you idle members of society! Why are you here harassing our good students?”

“None of your damn business! I’m not one of your students.”

Lao Wang was still speaking earnestly. “What future can you possibly have if you keep going like this? The sea of suffering is boundless, but it is never too late to turn back.”

The gang leader was fed up with his endless lecturing. He dug a pinky into his ear.

Then he said impatiently, “Get them. I hate these good students the most.”

The thugs had all brought wooden clubs and bricks.

Jiang Yunbai was the first to charge in.

The student council members behind him weren’t cowards either.

In the blink of an eye, the situation reversed.

Lao Wang stood in the middle trying to break up the fight, but he got stepped on several times. I saw with my own eyes that one of the girls was stepping on him to vent her anger.

I charged at the front, swinging the prosthetic leg at Yellow Hair.

“Don’t hurt my darling baby Pei Yu!”

Lao Wang heard me.

In the chaos, he turned back to look at Pei Yu, his expression full of disbelief.

Pei Yu said, “That’s right. It’s me.”
