Chapter 5
The man insisted, and I couldn’t refuse.
I could only offer my thanks, saying, “Sir, you are very kind.”
“It’s only right.”
Forced by circumstance, I had to give him my company’s address. Once there, the man showered me with praise in front of my manager.
The manager was a woman.
She said, “Xiao Tang is our only Male Lactation Consultant, and he has a 100% customer satisfaction rate.”
After a brief conversation, I thought he would leave. To my surprise, he specifically asked the manager, “Is he allowed to go home now?”
Sensing he was a high-value client, the manager quickly replied, “Of course, we have a flexible working schedule.”
The man turned back to me and said, “Then I’ll drive you home after all.”
“That’s really not necessary, is it?” I said, forcing a smile.
“It’s no trouble at all.”
Dammit!
You might as well just kill me!
This was pure torture.
Left with no choice, I gave him my address.
The place where I lived was quite run-down-a single room that cost eight hundred yuan a month.
He looked uneasy and insisted on seeing me inside. After taking a careful look around, he said with blatant disdain, “Your salary shouldn’t be low. Why do you live in a dump like this?”
Your house is the dump!
I replied awkwardly, “Well, I’m trying to save up some money so I can buy a burial plot! I’m truly afraid that I won’t be able to afford a house while I’m alive, and I won’t even have a grave when I’m dead.”
He asked, “What about your family?”
“I don’t want to be a burden to them. I’ll just live and die on my own.”
The man actually seemed to have some sympathy. He patted my shoulder and said, “A person needs something to look forward to. You’re not bad-looking. Find a woman with modest expectations and just make a life together.”
If I’d had a knife in my hand, I would have stabbed him right then and there.
“Would you like some water?” I turned and fumbled toward the table by the window. “I’ll pour you a glass.”
“No need,” the man said, seemingly satisfied. “I have to be getting back.”
Just leave already!
As soon as he left, I immediately double-locked the door.
I took out my phone again, but the urge to call the police had vanished.
After all, the man’s behavior suggested that framing me might only have been a ‘backup plan.’ Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so eager to follow me home to scout the situation.
Besides, framing a blind man for murder didn’t seem like a very clever logical move.
Moreover, as long as the police were involved, there was always a chance the truth would be uncovered.
Making the body disappear forever was the only way to settle things once and for all.
Unfortunately, the body was discovered the very next day.
Supposedly, it was the woman’s parents who called the police.
The deceased’s parents were prominent entrepreneurs on the city’s rich list.
They claimed they hadn’t been able to contact their daughter for an entire week. When they called their son-in-law, he was evasive, so they paid a personal visit to the Li Family.
To their surprise, their in-laws claimed that a woman whose baby died in the womb despite reaching full term was bad luck. Consequently, they had sent their daughter-in-law to a villa in the suburbs to recover alone.
The deceased’s parents had a heated argument with them and then rushed desperately to the villa.
As luck would have it, they arrived just as the son-in-law was preparing to dispose of the body.
During a media interview, the victim’s mother sobbed, “He… he was just holding that black body bag, stuffing my daughter right into it. My daughter was a glamorous socialite her whole life, and in the end…”
The reporter asked, “You saw this with your own eyes?”
“Yes, yes, I saw it with my own eyes. If I hadn’t seen my daughter’s face, I wouldn’t have believed it. He’s a beast! A beast!”
Shortly after, I saw many stories online about the past relationship between the deceased and her husband.
Seven or eight years ago, the heirs of two financial conglomerates held a ‘wedding of the century’ that made countless people drool with envy.
Alas!
Good times don’t last.
Perhaps in these wealthy families, profit always comes first while emotions remain thin. Marriage is merely a means of consolidating resources and continuing the lineage, rather than the result of love.
Because they had no children for so many years, the two had gradually drifted apart. Their relationship was so poor that even the company employees knew about it.
Eventually, Mrs. Li chose to undergo IVF and finally succeeded in getting pregnant. Only then did the couple reconcile.
Who could have known their luck would turn so sour? Just as Mrs. Li was approaching her due date, the baby died in the womb without any warning.
Only a few days later, the husband had committed murder and was disposing of the body.
In response, Mr. Li protested his innocence loudly.
“I really didn’t kill anyone! She was devastated about losing the baby. She didn’t want to see people looking at her with pity, so she suggested staying at the suburban villa alone.”
“I was worried, so I went to check on her every day.”
“Who knew that when I went to see her today, she was already in a body bag when I walked through the door? Just as I opened it to look, my parents-in-law arrived…”
These were the details the police told me when they brought me to the station to assist with the investigation.
Because Mr. Li had said, “My wife even called a lactation consultant yesterday.”
His purpose in saying this was to tell the police that Mrs. Li was still alive yesterday, and that he had eyewitnesses to account for his timeline from that point until the moment her body was discovered.
