Chapter 2

The woman lay down on the bed right in front of me, completely unconcerned.

The man double-checked, “You really can’t see anything?”

“I can’t.”

“Take off your sunglasses.”

I complied and took them off, saying with a hint of melancholy, “I got sick when I was little and didn’t get treatment in time. I slowly lost my sight.”

The woman gave the man an “OK” gesture.

The man brought over a small stool, placed it by the bed, and helped me sit down.

I opened my toolbox and asked, “How many days has it been since you gave birth, ma’am? Is the swelling and pain severe?”

The woman looked blank. Clearly, she had never given birth and had no idea what a lactation consultant’s primary job was.

The man answered for her. “There was an accident when our child was almost full-term, and we had to induce labor. It’s been a week now. She said she’s very uncomfortable… Whether it stimulates milk production or not doesn’t matter; the main thing is she wants a massage.”

The woman chimed in quickly, “Right!”

I was speechless. I couldn’t think of anything to say but “wow.”

Seeing my stunned expression, the man asked, “Can you do it?”

“I can,” I said, “but…”

“But what?”

“The price is non-negotiable.”

The man said readily, “No problem.”

I held up my hands and asked, “Do you need me to wear gloves? The results are the same, but it’s a bit more comfortable without them.”

The man and woman said in unison, “No gloves.”

How open-minded of them!

Under normal circumstances, a client would want me to wear eight layers of gloves.

I poured some essential oil into my hands and rubbed them together. “Ma’am, it’ll definitely feel a bit strange at first. We can chat to distract you.”

“What should we talk about?” the woman asked, sounding troubled.

“Usually, I talk about parenting with the mothers, but you…”

I sounded very sympathetic.

The woman said, “Just say whatever you want.”

My hands began to work, and my mouth followed suit. “They say people are born to suffer through trials, and only by tasting all the bitterness of life can one ascend to heaven. For a baby to complete their trials while still in the mother’s womb shows they must have had immense merit in their past life. As a mother, you should be happy for him.”

I did my best to comfort a mother who had lost her child.

Yet, the woman actually let out an appreciative “Mmm!”

Unbelievable.

Providing this kind of “reaction” should cost extra.

Meanwhile, I wasn’t sure what the man was doing. I could vaguely hear sounds coming from the living room, but he was being very cautious, deliberately playing soft music as a distraction.

About half an hour later, following the standard procedure, we stopped for a break.

After all, this work was tiring for me, and it wasn’t easy for the client either.

The man specifically brought in some tea and said politely, “Here, have some tea.”

Normally, I would have to grope around to take it.

But with that devious, treacherous smile on his face, he was clearly trying to get my fingerprints!

The two of them started exchanging looks again. The gist was that if I showed even the slightest hint of anything being wrong, they would silence me immediately.

I had no choice but to take the cup and say politely, “Thank you.”

I took a symbolic sip and said, “Ma’am, take a break. I’ll go sit in the living room for a bit.”

The man led me out.

But the corpse was gone.

Nothing remained on the floor but a pool of blood.
