Chapter 1
Chapter 1
When I arrived for the house call, I had to ring the doorbell for a long time before anyone finally answered.
A man barked at me, his voice dripping with irritation. “What are you ringing for? Get lost!”
As a service professional, I’ve dealt with all sorts of difficult clients, so I didn’t let his attitude get to me.
After all, I charge twelve thousand per session.
“Sir, I’m the lactation consultant. Mrs. Li booked an appointment with me.”
I hurried to show him my ID badge, but he wasn’t interested in that. Instead, he kept staring at my sunglasses and my white cane.
“Are you blind?”
“Yes!”
He experimentally waved his hand in front of my eyes. He even went as far as swinging a fist toward my face. Anyone with normal vision would have flinched or ducked as a reflex.
But I’ve undergone professional training; a little test like this was nothing I couldn’t handle.
The man finally believed me. He even carefully took my arm to lead me inside.
He apologized, saying, “I’m sorry about my attitude earlier. I’m just in a bad mood.”
Well, obviously.
As I was grumbling to myself, I suddenly spotted a woman lying on the floor.
She was wearing a pale purple silk nightgown, slumped on the ground in a bizarre, unnatural position.
Taking another step forward, I noticed blood slowly seeping out from her hair.
This…
Before I could react, another woman walked out of the bathroom holding a vase. When she saw me, she let out a scream, and the vase shattered on the floor.
I immediately froze in my tracks.
I should thank her. If she hadn’t screamed, I might have been exposed right then and there, and then they would have silenced me for good.
The man quickly said, “Look at you. Didn’t I tell you to stay lying down and not move? You’ve startled the consultant.”
The mental fortitude of these two was terrifying. They were perfectly calm while sharing a room with a corpse.
The two of them exchanged a look, seemingly reaching a silent agreement instantly.
The woman walked up to me and asked, “Did I book you for this time?”
“I’m sorry, ma’am. The appointment was for three o’clock, but because of my eyes and the fact that it’s my first time here, I’m half an hour late. My apologies.”
The woman gave a relieved smile, not minding at all. “Fine. Let’s get started then.”
She also experimentally waved a hand in front of my eyes before grabbing my cane to lead me into her bedroom.
During the walk, she intentionally led me past the spot where the body lay. I tripped and nearly fell.
The man caught me quickly and said, “The house is a mess.”
Suppressing my discomfort, I asked curiously, “What was that?”
The man said, “Just a throw pillow.”
I really wanted to give him a thumbs up and say: “Wow. Just wow.”
